Can villagers buy clothing on their own?

So Muffy just moved into town via amiibo card about a few weeks ago. Yesterday, when I visited her, she was wearing a halo. I never gave her a halo. I only gave her 2 dresses. Also, I used to have Katt in my town and she started wearing a dress I never gave her and I don’t believe I got her from someone’s void. Is this a new mechanic or is this a glitch?

This could explain why peoples villagers keep ending up with the dreaded muscle suits but I hope this isn’t a mechanic! I’m already terrified I’ll wake up one day to Bob sporting a muscle suit and I’ll cry

That's interesting. I see lots of my villagers inside Able Sisters but I've seen them buy clothes for themselves. I only gift clothes to my permanent villagers and they only wear what I give them. The rest are always wearing their default.

Now I remember hearing something about a glitch involving the wardrobes with giving a villager a gift and it appearing in someone else’s wardrobe, and I know Gala has a halo from her previous owner but I never heard anything about villagers wearing the glitched gifts. Muffy was actually wearing the halo in her house. Also it doesn’t explain how Katt got the dress

Pietro gave me a gift for Stella and it was an outfit now she wears it all the time. So they can ask you to give them clothes.

I don’t believe so. I just woke up one morning and she was wearing it. I do have an idea tho, when 2 villagers talk to each other, is there a possibility that they can gift them something without me delivering it?

Ah, I thought it might be a hobby thing, but I looked it up and Muffy’s hobby isn’t fashion... Villagers with the fashion hobby can sometimes wear things they were not gifted.
As far as I know, villagers can’t gift items to each other without having you deliver it.

Wait, I thought it was normal for our villagers to get clothes on their own?! Dom is my starter jock and one day he showed up wearing a red and black stripped shirt that I never gave. He likes to switch between his tye dye rainbow shirt and the stripped shirt. I thought it was like a feature where villagers can shop and get their own clothes? Is this not a thing? LOL. Because Chief also randomly wore a fishing vest too. And he wears it from time to time and I did not gift one to him. Also, I found him from island hopping.

Oh, I had a similar encounter with Diana. Suddenly she's wearing this really ugly looking swim suit like top! And when I talked to her, she says the cloth is from me! I was so confused?? I am pretty sure all I give her are nice dresses, nothing like that! And she wears them often too...

All villagers have a main outfit, a workout outfit, a yoga outfit, and a rain outfit. Some villagers with Fashion interest can also have a second main outfit. During special events, all villagers have an additional new outfit (Fishing Tourney/Bunny Day). Are you sure it's none of these?

No it wasn’t. Katt’s dress was the tweed dress. I think it’s Goldie might wear it. And Katt’s default is the old school jacket.

I once did a request for someone which involved bringing a present to Merry, who I purposefully haven't given clothes because I love her outfit... And I guess what the other villager gave her was a dumb ugly outfit because I saw her wearing it today. D:

I've actually had this happen with Stitches! It could be that I delivered him something from another villager, but I don't think so? Because I recall doing it for Peanut and she tried it on right there and then, and that item is now a part of her wardrobe, but Stitches just randomly started wearing some kind of waiter's uniform one day? LOL it's not ugly at least, but I'd rather they not wear random clothes if this is an actual mechanic.

I believe this is a different glitch, where you see other villager''s clothes in the wrong wardrobe. I believe even though you see Gala's clothes in Muffy's closet, Gala will still be the one wearing them.

I had the same issue though, Cherry displays clothes in her house that I could swear I never got her (or even saw before).
In my case I'm pretty sure it comes from a reconciliation gift she got from another villager or something... I don't remember anything like that but it would be the logical explanation.

I did wonder if they could buy clothes themselves because of that!
