can villagers be best friends?

i was told villagers can be best friends with others

i wouldn't be surprised if this was true because i've got reneigh and stitches on my island and they are always together
like talking to eachother, singing at the same time and visiting eachother's houses ☆

There's a compatibility system, so maybe that's what's in play? I'm not sure either, but I've definitely noticed some villagers hanging out with each other more than others.

I'm not 100% how the compatibility system worked - in ACNL it was based off zodiac element, species (some species received bonuses/penalties with each other, e.g. cat vs. mouse), and personality. ACNH might include hobby or have the same system or something, not sure. Just my best guess.

(In other cases, it might be that they have similar hobbies and do them together, e.g. fitness in the plaza?)

also they are both the only villagers i have that naruto run to be fair lol

I noticed that Kid Cat and Rudy often chatted with each other. They tend to run around together. Then I saw them sitting on a bench together once. I've also seen Rudy in Kid Cat's house once.

But Kid Cat has been adopted so I can't see any more of their interactions.

I've not once seen Lolly and Mitzi interact aside from forming a trio and singing in the plaza with Ankha.

Yeah. I've seen my Rolf, Apollo and Dobie do the Naruto run together. Same with Sterling, Rudy and Kid Cat.

my smugs, julian and raymond, are always visiting eachother and talking about how they can't live without lip balm and their cupboards are glitched so they've swapped clothes lol

but then my uchis, reneigh and katt, have never spoke together or visited eachother's houses once

I've seen villagers in each other's houses and celebrating each other's birthdays.
I think there's a compatibility guide somewhere which says which personalities tend to get along - not sure if this can change overtime in the game or not.
I caught Boyd and Wolfgang in a fight before and they're both cranky.
I also saw Peggy talking down to Wolfgang because he didn't know how to use a smart phone.
I saw the lazies being dissed for always talking about food.
Some other interactions seemed to be more peaceful from what I've observed. lol...

i wouldn't say it's personality because i've never seen jeremiah & punchy hang out, the way i've seen punchy & bob hang out from other people's screenshots. same goes to fauna, marina & maple. almost like they ignore each other even though they live next to each other. i have to make some changes with these same personalities

marshal & raymond are friends though, and the lazies are friends with the smugs. also, i feel like i've always seen punchy & fauna hanging out quite often. they've been to each other homes too.
