Can someone explain collectables to me?

I've seen a lot of people looking for various collectables. What do they do? Anything? For example, I kind of want to get the September birthstone, since that's mine, but does it do anything other than sit on my profile? If not, I might be better off using TBTs for trade. Thanks for answering!

Yeah it's interesting how valuable they are to the general TBT public. Nothing wrong with that! Some people like to decorate depending on the holiday/season too you'll probably notice.

Some people have no use for trading so they're a fun thing to spend the TBT on because you'll end up gathering a good sum without noticing much.
