Can I get non-fruit trees by burying bells?

You have to have a golden shovel to be able to bury 1k+ to grow regular trees.

Indeed you can.
You need a golden shovel (which you can buy on here if you don't have).
Then bury sacks of 1000 bells.
That will give you a pretty oak sapling!
