As somebody who made a case over his own race on the campaign trail, Senator Barrack Obama discussed the struggle this country has faced in his speeches, including slavery. Ironically, after being elected to become the next President of the United States, Barack Obama has called for the repudiation of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution and the creation of a new program known as national service.

A newly released website Change.gov expressed the details of this program as the internet stepped back in surprise on November 6th, two days after the election. The website explains, "Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55..."

In the words of former U.S. Senator Robert Taft, "A draft is characteristic only of a totalitarian state."

I hardly see how this is a big deal. Just because he says something, doesn't mean it's going to happen and Community Service is generally required to graduate, these days.

It's his official government website. It's forced labor unless somebody messed up with this website.... but there it is. It's once of the most unconstitutional things you can do.

I don't know how being a slave to the state is "not a big deal"... maybe you didn't quite understand what this is saying. :gyroidhuh:

Does working (with kids) at church count as community service?

Probably, but don't just think about it as being an inconvenience. Look at it from the philosophical point of view and you will come to the scary conclusion that it is slavery under the state. Freedom is nothing in this country anymore. Anyone who calls America The Land of the Free is a liar. The government OWNS you.

That's true. America is NOT Land of the Free! The fact taht Prop 8 passed
is also proof that America is not land of the free.

It really isn't forced, you could just drop out of school. Now these programs can only apply to public schools I assume but many private schools already require community service.

This has nothing to do with the 13th amendment.

I am a little concerned by that though, I thought the plan was to provide incentives such as scholarships for outstanding community service. Then again there are really plenty of those.

Prop 8 really disappointed me. If it is overturned by the courts it will show me this system can work.

I hope the courts do oeverturn it. I myself voted NO on 8.

It;s just so incredibly ridiculous! It has nothing to do with teaching kids about
smae-gender marriages in schools. All that talk about it being taught in schools
is a LIE! Really, it was all these stupid religious people making such a big deal about
it.

Banning same-gender marriages is just like taking rights away from people.
It's so unfair!

Sporge, it says "required" right on the new government website

edit: Oh wow, you mean this is a "school" policy.... school is the big local thing. For the federal government to do something related to education is an extreme attack on local governments. It's just so hard for our generation to understand because this is how we've been brainwashed. I know any education policy is illegal under the 10th Amendment... but the government is so big and so intrusive on our lives these days, I wonder if it's even worth bringing up the Constitution anymore. The Federal government never touched education because it was always illegal. And for good reasons. Federal regulations have proved to devalue education. But hey, what we want is Unity, right Obama? Strength through unity! ^o) For a fellow V fan, Sporge, I'd expect you'd rally against Obama with me. ._.

Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year.

If you are not in high school or college there is no requirement. Besides volunteer work is great on resumes and where you should be starting your career anyway.

But again, I am certain this can only apply to public schools.
Edit: don't get me wrong I disagree with this policy, you can't force community service. I would say offer incentives may be even tax breaks for it would be acceptable. But forcing it is ridiculous.

I suppose the federal government should not be able to, but there are ways, such as giving money to states that pass this or stuff like that that makes states do it.

I have to ask though would you have any problem if your local government just decided to require it on their own by the vote of the people you live near?

Even concerning public schools... this is simply an impossible proposal. Public schools were formed by local governments and parents. The two administrations to bring the federal government over education systems the most had the two worst approval ratings in American history. Jimmy Carter and George W. Bush. It looks like Obama is interested in using the same forceful hand against the local education systems and I'm, sadly, guessing he will not be too kind to homeschoolers as well.

I have to ask though would you have any problem if your local government just decided to require it on their own by the vote of the people you live near?
Yes, but at least it would be legal by the U.S. Constitution.

It's not volunteer work if you're forced to do it.

What the hell? This... isn't too good. I mean, I don't have anything against community service, but a mandatory 100 hours if you're a college student? That seems like a lot... who's got that much time?

yeah I sent in something about it on the site, I suggest you guys do too if you don't think it to be plausible or fair.

Just hope they messed up with the explanation on that site :gyroidsurprised:

lol ._.

um

Most college students don't have TIME to give 100 hours of community service a year, especially if they're working too.

I'm calling BS on this.

They edited the website since it was posted. It's still a horrible and unconstitutional idea :gyroidtongue:

I don't see anything wrong with requiring 100 hours of community service *in an academic year*. If you get $4,000 + off state tuition, and a scholarship? I don't get why people are against this. I am a self-supported undergraduate student with a metric TON of student loan debt. I *wish* this plan had been in place when I first started college because I wouldn't be carrying this debt that will take a large portion of my life to pay off. It's far better than the ten year struggle I've had to get this far through undergrad because I am single with no family financial contribution.

Who is going to pay for college if we don't earn it? If people don't want their taxes raised, then there has to be a way to pay for it. Even if it's volunteer labor. If you want to go to school enough, you will do it. I'll be first in line.
