So I?m looking to collect beetles for the bug-off, what is the best method for collecting island bugs?
I read somewhere that you should actually remove all the bushes and flowers to minimize the crawling bugs and butterflies. And they also recommended cutting all the palm trees and other trees to stumps to maximize the beetles and make it harder for you to scare them away,
Is this true, does it really work? I?m hesitant to do that because I think the islands so pretty, and I love all the butterflies, but I know I could easily plant them back.
What?s your best method?

I usually cut down my trees and bushes and leave my palm trees. I may leave one tree because sometimes bugs spawn on that too~

The beetles are on tree and palm tree trunks, not stumps, so I do not know why they would recommend cutting them down :O

Personally I planted as many palm trees as I could while keeping them spaced enough so I can see from the distance if there is a beetle on them. I also put them not too close to the water, so I have a path to walk without scaring them too easily (but I still walk rather slowly, I certainly do not run). I also kept a few normal trees to get the 10k bells beetle (I do not know its name n English sorry).

The insects/fishes reset very easily on this island, like if you go back and forth between the western and eastern side you can see new critters more often than in your village (well, that is my feeling at least) :)

Yeah I wasn?t sure about actually cutting down the palm trees- I took the bushes out at least, but this person was claiming that when you leave the palm tree stumps, the beetles still spawn on them, and it?s actually easier to catch them because you can walk up to them easily without scaring them and catch them.
I was hesitant thought because I?d never seen that. So what I think I?m gonna do it cut a few palms down to stumps and see if anything does spawn on them or not and if that?s true.. then maybe do more. I just get frustrated when I scare them away so easily!

I have 3 palm tree stumps in my village and 1 on the island, and I never saw anything on them ^^'

Also don't plant them(palm trees) too close to the actual sea, apparently they can fly away from the waves.. or it's my imagination. And yeah don't run or walk too fast either obviously.

If you’re talking about the island, then yes, remove all trees, flowers and bushes. Apparently, bugs spawning there takes up space on how many there can be at one time. Then just either circle around the area or enter or exit the building. From my experience, you can actually catch the cyclommatus stag and the Goliath beetle by walking up to it and quickly swinging your net at it once in range. Speeds up the process a bit.

In addition to removing all flowers, bushes, and normal trees (unless you want to catch the rainbow stag and giant stags, in which case leave 1 or 2), I remove the (like 3 or 4 I think?) palm trees on the very bottom of the island because beetles there will be very difficult to sneak up on. It will also concentrate the area/number of trees you are looking for beetles on even more, and you can sort of walk back and forth on the bottom between the two sides to constantly refresh/respawn them.

Remember that beetles only appear from 5pm-8am, but it's best to go after 7pm because then you won't have to deal with the annoying locusts spawning everywhere. The only bugs besides beetles will be the wharf roaches and tiger beetles, which you can scare away by slapping your bug net on the ground near them.

I've also found it helpful to dig a hole right in front of every palm tree to create a kind of 1-tile buffer/safety zone that helps keep you from getting too close. Golden stags also scare away most easily... And I sometimes purposely scare away goliath beetles because they don't sell for as much (6,000) compared to the others (8-12,000).

Digging a hole in front of the palm tree is a good idea, sometimes I do get too close because I?m afraid I?m not close enough, and I end up missing it and scaring it away :p

The reason people cut down trees is so they can control exactly which trees the bugs will spawn on. If you have fewer trees, and remove the bushes and everything you can, you know exactly where the bugs are going to spawn.

Personally, I didn't alter my island much because I like it, but if you're trying to maximize profit, the way to go is to have only a few trees on the sides and little else so you can better control where bugs will spawn. You can only have 5 bugs at a time, so the better you can stop cheaper bugs from appearing, the better. Chase off anything that isn't worth much.
