For me, after seeing that I'd have to buy a scanner for the cards and that I'll probably have to buy pack after pack of cards, there is no way I'll be buying this game. I love Animal Crossing with all my heart and I actually like this game, but the amount of money I'd have to put in to getting cards and buying the scanner for my 3DS, it's just not worth it to me.
Now hear me out:
Honestly, I really like the idea of the game. It looks adorable and the customization is great. However, I'm tired of all these money grabby games from Nintendo. I've been playing Pokemon Shuffle and Pokemon Rumble World and the amount of times they want you to spend your own money on these games is kind of ridiculous.
If AC: HHD is going to be a free game (which it might), it's going to depend heavily on people buying the cards to make its profit. However, what I feel is going to happen is this:
The base game will release and be around 10-15 dollars. It will come with probably 3-6 starting cards. Then the scanner for people who just have the normal 3DS will probably be around 5-15 dollars as well. So already, if you're a 3DS user and not a New 3DS user, you're going to be spending around 25 dollars. Each pack will probably sell for 3-9 dollars and you most likely won't be guaranteed new cards with each pack. If they make a card for every villager, plus NPC characters, that's around 350 cards. Each pack will probably have anywhere from 4-10 cards in it. Which is a lot of opportunity for duplicate cards.
It's no doubt there will be rarities to cards later on. Nintendo has to know that people prefer some villagers over others. I'm sure a lot more people would be excited they got a Beau or a Marshal than if they got a Henry, Tipper, or Jambette. This will make the prices of these rare cards go up, so if you're planning on just buying certain villagers off the internet, they will probably be a lot more expensive.
It just seems like way too much money to be putting into a game. I personally don't like games that require you to spend copious amounts of money to continue playing. That's part of the reason I don't play the pay-to-play MMOs.
Now, I know we don't know a lot about the game right now, but these are just my assumptions and I'm not interested in spending that kind of money. If they somehow find a way to make this a lower budget game, I'd happily buy it, but for now it isn't on my wishlist.
What about you? What do you think about purchasing the game and my assumptions on what the pricing could look like?
