I was just wondering if there’s any down side to a Villager being “second hand”, last week I spent 286 NMT finding Beau, at the same time Beau was available in TBT Villager forum for 30 NMT.....I could have saved myself a lot of effort by just buying him off the forum couldn’t I?

Can someone please explain to me any positives or negatives of either meeting a Villager naturally on an Island or in the Campsite or buying them on here? Is there anything specific I should ask to make sure the Villager is legit?

Many Thanks

I'm not 100% sure on this but I am almost certain that there is no downside. Apparently even if you gift your villagers clothes/furniture, they will reset back to original once you trade them away anyways. (Someone please confirm this!) Even on the chance that they don't reset, the vast majority of people who dabble in villager trading keep them original.
In New Leaf I remember the villagers I adopted talking about their old town a fair bit, but I've adopted 2 villagers from other players and so far they've never mentioned their previous town outside of the initial greeting.
Also, I'm not quite sure what you mean by "villager is legit".

The only positive I can think of at the moment, in favour of getting a villager naturally on an island, is that you're guaranteed to have their original house furniture and outfits. I know some people are particular about the appearance of their villagers' interiors.

I know that buying villagers in the past has come with the risk of them glitching, but I'm not sure if that's still the case.

I'm not sure if my case is an outlier or not, but I once adopted a Reneigh whose house had a starry wallpaper and animated cloud flooring. I saw this when I went to the owner's island to invite her, and she still had it when she came to my island.

I don't know about furniture, but for clothes you have to talk to Isabelle. I gave my old save file's Merengue away and the new owner loved the two cute extra dresses she had hahahahaha

I adopted Bones from another player and he usually wears a sweater that player gave him, so he tells me it was a gift from that player. He also has several bugs at home and I think they're not original, but I don't really mind. I'm giving him stuff in hopes he'll release them or something.

Ok the poster above me should prove me wrong, but I'm so confused about the wallpaper and flooring since villagers never change their wallpaper/flooring. Would you happen to have a photo of her interior?

The wallpaper/flooring would have been because the original owner had TT'd backwards and glitched their house into the previous villagers house. This glitch only effects the original owner and not the buyer

I would also like to add that even if the original owner gave the villager new clothing, the villager will still sometimes change into their original clothing throughout the day so you'll only see the un-original clothing sometimes. However, gifted furniture will always be there unless that villager gifts some of it to you which does happen sometimes.

The only thing I'd be concerned about is if the seller is lying about how they got the villager, glitches could be involved and more popular villagers in tier 1 are more likely to try and scam you for the villager (which I had happen 3 times in a row of buying Marshal). I would be aware of how they're making their villager leave just to be safe. I know sometimes campsite forceouts and amiibo forceouts can cause serious problems to fix, which has also happened to me. I think campsite forceouts are okay now but I'm unsure about amiibos. Other things like furniture and clothing are the only other things that come along with getting a villager second hand. So if you don't want them wearing random things maybe go natural. :)

I think I've never seen Bones wearing something other than the sweater the original player gave him and a pullover I gave him a couple of days ago. Might be a coincidence, though. The rest of my villagers do wear their original clothes several times a day and change into the ones I've given them.

Thanks guys,

I’m just going to stockpile NMT between villagers asking to move out, I don’t TT so I’ve got a fortnight each time to build up some NMT before I go dreamy hunting.

The 17 straight hours it took to get Beau was a pain but I can honestly tell you I’ve rarely got a feeling on a game like I did when I visited my 286th Island and saw Beau in the distance!

I would guess that it's a coincidence- I adopted Reneigh from someone else in unoriginal clothing (that she has told me was gifted from the previous owner) but she often changes back to her default clothing. I might be wrong though

This glitch only effects the exterior. I know bc I did that on accident, and Kyle has Marina's exterior, but not the interior (sadly, it would be funny bc Marina's house is pink and has the cute set haha)

Oh ok, well that is a mystery then! Maybe if we gift them wallpapers and flooring they can change it then?

There was someone on the forums talking about a Raymond they got that has different wallpaper and floor, and some users claimed it could be a hacked Raymond. Though do villagers change their wallpaper/floors if you give them some?

I am pretty sure they don't change if you gift them. There was a thread about this running around. So their Reneigh must be hacked

Unfortunately, I stupidly forgot to take one. 😰 But it definitely wasn't her original wallpaper and flooring! I ended up just voiding her and trading for a different Reneigh...

I'm honestly not sure if she was hacked or what, but I definitely haven't seen any confirmation on whether villagers do change wallpaper/flooring.

Well, I'm glad I ended up voiding the weird Reneigh, if that's the case!

There are no downsides except risking getting a villager with altered furniture. In my experience, it is hard to replace their furniture, ( I've tried). but they do put a lot of bugs. (Zucker's 4 flea collection is growing ).

But I came to same realisation as you! I spent 50 tickets hunting for Olivia and nothing when I could have gotten her for around 10 tickets. :( and that's what I did. so I always try to buy specific villagers for reasonable prices, rather then try my luck island hoping. never been lucky enough.
