Are Amiibo cards region locked?

Been Googling this but not found an answer. Some specific animal cards seem non existent in my country so I'm thinking of getting them internationally. Have Nintendo region locked the cards or anything like that in order to be a royal pain?

Nope, I have Japanese Sanrio cards and they work just fine on my US copy of New Leaf.
