Without time traveling, I've heard that talking to them once, then ignoring them helps. Otherwise, it's just luck. Sending them rude letters, hitting them, shoving them into pitfalls don't help. I think that makes them stay more. Good luck!
Like Sap88 said, talk to them once when they move in, and then just ignore them completely. I've been doing that, and they're typically out by the end of the week, two weeks at most.
The suggestions above sometimes work.. Sometimes it doesn't, at least for me. There's really no proven way without time traveling, and even then it's hard to get a certain villager to move out. I'm at 10 villagers, trying to get Hans to move out but I've had the villagers I like most ask me, so maybe just pretend to be their best friend and send them letters with gifts... Makes no sense but that seems to be how it is.
the replies help me out too, as i need to move out clyde asap. but he came at the worst time. he can't move out before christmas unless i time travel to the past, although now that i think about it maybe it's not too harmful if i tt backwards.

I'm about 99% sure that TTing backwards, no matter how many days, isn't harmful. Even if you TT backwards like a year it just counts as an extra day. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong though.

I'm very fairly sure going backwards any length of time only pretty much counts as one forward day! But then going forward again would be a pain (if someone wanted to make their in-game date to match their irl date again) (I don't know if people actually do that often but that's how I am with it. I like to re-align it)
