"Attack of the Friday Monsters" is a really unique game on the DS you can get for about $10.
It's mostly point & click & walking about in a nostalgic world that is meant to take you back to childhood times.
The story really pulled on my heartstrings (in a bittersweet way) by the end of the game, and I won't spoil the ending because it's worth playing through & learning what happens for yourself.
It's about a young boy living in Japan during times of war, but it is an innocent game set in a Studio Ghibli style world where the boy runs about playing cards & talking to people.
The whole game is a metaphor for growing up, things we miss from childhood & what it must have been like in Japan when the country was devastated by war & using the metaphor of Monsters that trample the countryside to demonstrate this or the issues the little boy's parents are facing are blown up into dinosaurs & robot monsters.
But really you could interpret the metaphors however you like, and that was just my personal take on what the creatures in the game are.
It may be a literal fairy tale where everything is fairy tale & I read too much into it. That's the whole point of the game & the enjoyment is thinking about these things yourself.
It's really a very clever game & a sweet, thoughtful story. I loved it & wish there were more games like this.
