Well, I just feel weird when people ask me what my favorite song/artist/music genre is because I don't really like the music that most people like... All I can really stand listening to is stuff like pokemon music or other video game music xD It just has no words, and it can vary so much in sound. When songs have words, it just bugs me and I don't really know why, especially for homework because the words from the songs get mixed into when I am reading or thinking while doing homework (Which is the main time I listen to music).

I can't really tell anyone "Oh I just listen to pokemon music all the time" xD I would get really weird looks and people would most likely feel turned away because of how geeky it sounds lol.

Am I just incredibly weird or does anyone else have the same situation?

There is a a hell of a lot of music without lyrics, you know.

Yeah I totally get you. Got no time to process them lyrics when I'm crunching through calculations and writing papers for Nature. I just like to play the sound I recorded of a magnetic stirrer on loop. Makes me feel like I'm in the lab, gets me in the work mood. My friends think it's weird but they don't get me.

I get you to-People think I'm actually a society reject because I don't listen to music. They ask me what's my favorite bands/genre and I just shake my head. Don't get me wrong, I don't complain if someone plays it- I'm just a visual person and don't really care for extra noise (Unless I'm in the shower or the car for a REALLY long time)

OP - I get what you mean. Even though I don't listen to music at all there's some kids at my school that play songs without lyrics a lot, so don't feel like it's geeky.

Also, I agree with the above quote 100%

Not always, but sometimes I get called crap for liking certain bands… Emo's a common one when I say I like Panic! at the Disco. I don't care though. I know some people like what I listen to and that's good enough for me.

I don't listen to much recent music since I don't own a radio or search up new songs, so yeah sometimes I feel like a musical outcast lol I like alternative music for the most part.

In one of my ipods I have pokemon music and other artists like Frank Sinatra and other songs that I liked when watching tv shows like Scrubs and in the another ipod Mexican music. But when people ask me what my favorite music/band is I say Pokemon. I love the game music and the anime music. I feel weird, but we all have different tastes. I don't feel like a musical outcast because music is music no matter what other people listen to.

I tend to like music from classic movies. People my age always are for what's new, and usually, the newer ones suck compared to what you'd hear in West Side Story.

its so weird to me that some people do not enjoy listening to music. i get not liking the popular stuff, but not at all???? wowie

I don't listen to too much current/popular music either, besides a select few songs. I listen to a lot of video game music of course, but I also listen to some 90's and 00's punk and rock. There's a few emo bands I like too. I also love Vocaloid music, as well as K-Pop and J-Pop. There's a few classical pieces I enjoy as well. Some orchestral, but the piano especially. My phone is filled with tons of different music. As you can see I'm pretty flexible when it comes to genres, I typically loves songs with a really strong melody. I really don't like a lot of rap, hip hop, and dubstep because of this.

Anyways, everyone is different and likes their own things, so you shouldn't feel bad about liking music that makes you consider yourself as an "outcast". If anything, you should feel proud to have such a unique taste. When I was younger and I listened to Pokemon music, my sister would say... "That's not music. There's no lyrics." Music doesn't have to have lyrics to be considered music. So you're not alone, and don't be too hard on yourself.

And video game music is really good for homework and schoolwork actually, since it's designed to help you concentrate. Music with singing confuses your brain when you're trying to focus on something else -- your brain also tries to focus on the lyrics at the same time. Some of my favorite songs I listen to while doing homework and stuff are this, this, and this. Oh, and this. Feel free to give them a listen if you have the time.

Yes, because most of the music I listen to is either American classic rock (some of it older than me), video game music, anime music, indie music, and Japanese music, with some random classical and jazz thrown in too. To be honest, I actually like some Lady Gaga tracks and a few other things, but for the most part, too much of the popular stuff nowadays is more R&B or rap influenced, and I've never cared for those genres.

Amen! Instrumentals are awesome!!!!:D

Also, let me put this way, when I was in high school...

All I listened to pretty much was power metal, death metal, thrash metal, etc. metal and whatever....when I was listening to HammerFall, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Edguy, Iron Savior, Jag Panzer, Vader, Metal Church, Decapitated, etc. everyone else was listening to stuff like Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Slipknot, Sum 41, All That Remains, P.O.D., Bring Me the Horizon, and a bunch of other nu metal, emocore/screamo, pop punk, pop, hip hop, hardcore punk, metalcore, etc. stuff, so 'DEFINITELY get the feeling of "musical isolation"...although..that being said...I've opened up my mind to all those other genres of music as well as many others over the past few years so I don't feel as musically isolated as I did before(though still somewhat...lol, a lot of people on here seem to enjoy k-pop, j-pop, mainstream pop/electronica, and etc. music, which I don't enjoy at all and I've yet to see many others on here who have similar music taste to mine, but hey, to each their own! XD....the only music I consider truly abysmal right now would be stuff like Nickelback, Seether, Theory of a Deadman, Hinder, etc. IOW all that mainstream alternative rock/post-grunge stuff...ick!! >.o) I'm still expanding my horizons though so I may even start to enjoy those as well( the k-pop and j-pop stuff...not so sure about Nickelback and mainstream pop/electronica stuff like Lady GaGa though haha!!)

"Musical outcast" isn't really a thing, in my opinion. There are many different kinds of music and some people like one kind of music more than the other.
I, for example, like bands such as Coldplay, Arcade Fire, Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit, Mutemath, Future of Forestry, Alt-J, and Snarky Puppy. Some of those bands are more popular than others. Snarky Puppy has no lyrics and is instrumental, and by listening to that, there is nothing wrong whether people like it or not. Everyone has differences in likes and opinions, and that's what makes us human.

I listen to a lot of **** but I still feel like I could listen to more

I just don't like when people ask me what kind of music I listen too. I don't know how to answer that. I listen to almost all kinds of music.

I tend to listen to music scores from my favourite movies, or the songs I hear whenever I watch a great musical film.

I kind of do. I listen to some very obscure and unknown artists, which people like to make fun of me just because I don't like mainstream stuff or ****.

...this makes me very curious as to what you listen to....I love the obscure and unknown(it's where all the real gems are at!).
