He didn't castrate himself, why the bloody hell would he do that? Zeus castrated him, like Cronus did to his father. The irony in this is that Cronus ate his children because he didn't want to suffer the same fate as his father.

And back to the gods not feeling pain, I'm pretty sure Demeter felt pain when her daughter was abducted into the underworld by Hades, not the physical kind mind you, but according to myth she was in such great pain that she made all the plants whither and the crops die.
