As some of you may or may not know, I've recently roped my son into playing ACNL with my daughter and myself. I tried to convince him to join the forum, but he was reluctant to do so because he's new and said that he wouldn't be trading or visiting anyone until he was sure he wouldn't make anyone upset while visiting their towns. ( My words, not his. He's a little more down to earth and used more common coarse language. LOL) I've written out a few common sense rules for him and would love to hear if you have any additions, suggestions or corrections.
Obey all rules, posted or verbal - whether you understand the reason behind them or not.
Put away your axe or shovel before boarding the train. Walking around with a tool in your hand makes the host understandably nervous.
Remember the manners I taught you, always say Please and Thank you.
Never run. Only walk and follow the paths that have been laid out.
Always ask permission before going exploring. Some host prefer to get trades over with and done and having you wander off makes them upset.
It is nice to bring a present when visiting a town. I usually bring a few hybrids, but baskets of perfect fruit or bell tips are also nice, especially if the host has gone to the trouble of letting people in to catalog items.
When visiting, the golden rule is look but don't touch. Pretend that you're in a very expensive China shop.
Voided villagers are like cold viruses. They can unfortunately spread when you're visiting. Minimize the risks if you don't want random villagers by letting visitors know if there's less than 10 villagers in your town. Even taking precautions you cannot be 100% safe since you can get a voided villager from streetpassing a stranger. If you're not willing to risk it, then turn off your streetpass option until you have a full town.
If you have less than 10 villagers and ask for help, whether it's to build up your train station or complete a PWP, you assume all risks on receiving a voided villager. The people coming to your town are there at your request. They are going out of their way to help you.
If you are selling something, clear your void before posting. Clearing your void is easy - just come and visit a full town. Clearing your void will ensure that visitors are not getting more than they paid for. The burden of prevention is on you.
If you are buying something or just going to visit someone clear your void before boarding the train; again, the void clearing should be done by both parties.
Understand that voided villagers are a part of the game mechanics, and sometimes, despite the best efforts of all parties, a unwanted hitchhiker may arrive. Do not lose your cool. It's part of the game. It's annoying, but not fatal and is repairable.
It is courteous to give a wifi rating upon the completion of a visit. The wifi rating takes only seconds and assists all parties in establishing a reputation among the forum users. You can find the wifi rating button by clicking on the name of the person you are visiting - or hosting - which will take you to their profile. There is a tab that's labeled WiFi rating and when you click on that it gives you the option to submit feedback. Do so.
Do not respond to a retail thread and not check back. If you've created a thread in the retail board respond to everyone that answers either in the thread or by PM'ing them. If you're done with the thread, close it. You can find that option by advanced editing the first post.
Do not respond to giveaway or cycling threads if you are not able to take the prize/villager that's offered right away or very soon thereafter. It is discourteous to expect people to put things on hold while you get your affairs in order. At the very least give them a reasonable time frame to arrange things and stick to it. If the person hosting the thread agrees than thank them for their patience. If they don't wish to or cannot wait, respect their decision and thank them anyways.
Do not use vulgar language in the game, while visiting or while posting. There is a great range of ages in this forum, from young people to old farts like me. Just assume you're visiting your great great Aunt who's living out her retiring years in a convent and speak accordingly.
