DISCLAIMER: TO ALL PEOPLE WHO PLAYED THE ORIGINAL ACE OF SPADES, THIS GAME IS DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT, BUT I AM REVIEWING THIS GAME ON ITS OWN, AND WILL NOT BE BRINGING DOWN THE SCORE FOR ANY DIFFERENCES.
----------------------------------BACKGROUND----------------------------------------
Ace of Spades was originally a free FPS created by Ben Aksoy. It became popular and was
receiving free updates. Eventually, Jagex, the same company that brought you Runescape
bought Ace of Spades and developed a full game that was released on Steam yesterday.
The game combined the building of Minecraft, and the FPS genre.
-----------------------------------GAMEPLAY-----------------------------------------
Now, like the original, in Ace of Spades, you can build and dig tunnels/trenches/bunkers ect.
Depending on the class you choose you will have different tools to dig and build with. At the
beginning of each match (or whenever you want, really) you select one of 4 classes. The
Miner, who obviously excels at digging/building. The Commando, who carries a machine gun,
or a rocket launcher, and is designed to take the most damage. The Marksman, who is the
sniper class. And finally, the Rocketier, who wears a jetpack and uses an SMG, which is good
for infiltrating bases. A few of the classes feel a little unbalanced, but it's not that noticeable.
All of this would be amazing, aside from the fact that this game, at the time of writing this review,
has some terrible lag issues. Not only is it connection issues, but also frame-rate and just overall
performance issues. My PC is well over the recommended specs, but I still get bad frame-drops
when things get interesting. But, if your comp can do this, and you can find yourself a server
with less than 90 ping (otherwise it's almost unplayable),you're in for a good time.
----------------------------------PRESENTATION--------------------------------------
The game doesn't look like a AAA game, because it's trying to keep in the very minimalist
art-style of the original. But, what it does do, it does right. The fully destructable buildings
and mountain sides all look very good for the style they were going for. Something that was
also very well done in this game was the soundtrack. Every song sounds great and fits the
game very well. From the song that plays at the title screen, to the songs that play in the
last few minutes of matches, when a song starts playing, the game becomes a million times
more enjoyable.
-------------------------------------VERDICT----------------------------------------
Ace of Spades is a very fun, frantic class-based shooter, with some of the best parts of
Minecraft thrown in. Although there are some very crippling, frame-rate, and latency issues,
that at times can make the game almost unplayable, when the planets aline and your game
starts co-operating, you'll easily see why this game is worth your ten bucks.
Extremely bad latency issues. -1
A few class balancing issues. -1
OVERALL SCORE: 8/10
