Well, I was talking to some colleagues earlier and was telling them "well the TV was on in the background while I was playing Animal Crossing and I heard the guy say something about [insert graphic paramedic procedure from medical show that kinda grosses me out here involving lots of blood] and it was horrible when I looked up and saw it!"

And so the conversation began with a fit of laughter "What's Animal Crossing?". So I explained, telling them about the fossils and museum and making the town a nice place to live etc. Someone said it sounded like a cute game but there was generally a lot of laughter involved so I just stopped talking before I mentioned being mayor, that would have been a whole new level of awkward... Hmmmm, guess I sort of forget that on here we're all of the same mindset and it's not always easy trying to explain the game to others who have never even heard of it. Ah well, their loss!

Any similar stories out there or just me being the bumbling embarrassed idiot of the day?

Yessss. We went to a cocktail party (but there were a lot of boys too) and we were all sitting in the living room, drinking our cocktails. The TV was on and after a few hours the commercial of AC:NL came on. I was like "Look! That's the game I told you about!" to my friends. A few other people heard me too. Then one of the guys said. "Haha, well my niece plays it too." I was already pretty emberassed so I calmly said. "Ahh, that's nice.." Then he shouted "And she is SIX years old! Bahahaha" So, everyone laughed, but I just went with it. Everyone was kinda getting drunk and no one ever talked about it again. So I let it be. Wish, I just had kept my mouth shut. >.>

My boyfriend thinks it's great that I play because I always get excited about it, and he loves that (because i always have a stupid grin on my face :P)

But when we're with friends, he'll mention that I play the game...and I can't help but feel embarrassed... They never make remarks about it or anything, but saying I play Animal Crossing to people in their late 20th/begin 30th is kinda embarrassing...

I asked "Is this price right? 2 bells?" when I meant to say euros in my local supermarche. Thankfully in France you can be forgiven for messing up the French :D

Haha nice! Yes, I'm 27 so a lot of people just think it's weird. Marjet, you did well to just do that! Kimmy, my bf (38) also got into it after months of laughing at me and now he begs me to trade items and visit my shops, I got the last laugh there! Maybe yours will go the same way ;)
Ah Clarke, that is legendary, I do believe one day that I'll end up saying bells too.

Whenever someone tells me that Animal Crossing is a children's game, I explain to them how children simply love paying off mortgages, writing letters, planting trees, and spending hours contemplating different interior design ideas.

The problem is, it's really hard to sum up this game to someone who has no idea what it is.
There's someone I've been trying to explain it to for awhile, but the problem is, you just have to play it!
The game is very popular with both genders, so it's be no means only "cute".
They won't understand it until they play!

The only reason games are considered for children is because they became mainstream when we WERE children. There hasn't been a senior generation of people who grew up with videogames yet. It's close to being socially acceptable across all age groups now though. I will be playing them till I croak.

Me: I caught a Horned Hercules in AC:NL!
Friend: But dat's for kids!
Me: Well, yesterday you were watching MLP and I didn't told you it was childish.

He already thinks it's nice. (he specially likes the custom design things, he even made a path for me, lol) but I don't see him playing it himself. I wish! You're lucky your bf plays it! :D would be fun! But my bf is happy because I'm very happy with the game (which he bought for me as a gift :)) I just wish he wouldn't tell all our friends ><

I've played the series since the Gamecube version. That version came out when I was in 8th grade...so even then, it was a hard sell for some people. My best friend at the time and I would play over at eachother's towns every weekend or so. The DS version came out when I was in high school. Kids already got teased if they were playing their "Gameboys" at lunch. I played the Wii version, and I was probably done after about 1-2 months. But this 3DS version is a whole new level of awesome! Even though I'm an "adult" now, and I have real responsibilities, like paying rent and going to a real job, I still find the enjoyment and relaxation of Animal Crossing. I do have to say...my boyfriend does not understand the game at all, and when I mention things, such as "OMG! I have to get the Banana to the Reindeer before I go to bed!" He just rolls his eyes at me. I think it's definitely hit or miss, but I don't think there are very many fans that are under middle school age that get everything out the game that you're supposed to. My sister is 11, and I know she would probably love the game, but I don't see her really getting into everything that it offers.

They advertised the new game with kids who seemed to be into their mid teens. So people can't say much about it being a kids game because most kids can't sort out or appreciate the deep meanings in plots in most "kid" games.

I'm still a kid(11) and I understand it. Being the mayor and doing your duties are important and I think when they say "kids", they mean around the 10 to the however-long-you-want-to-play-AC range.

Animal Crossing basically pops up in every conversation I have with my friends. I'm talking like this:
"In Animal Crossing you have to pay off mortgage, and you get to be the mayor in the newest version. It's sooo cool and you get to plant flowers and blahblahblahblah." You can see where I'm going with this. I don't mean to, I just want my friends to play.

Ha ha! I mention AC all the time, but I'm usually around one of two kinds of people:
1. People who know me and are well aware that AC is one of my more "normal" hobbies.
2. Complete strangers who can have whatever opinion they want because I'll never see them again.

Let people laugh. They don't know what they're missing. ^_^

At one point my friends gave me some crap about playing AC. They stopped when I beat them at everything else. Now they just don't say anything about it at all. I even go as far as to tell them "Quit bothering me I have flowers to water".

As I had stated in another thread, it is funny to see the expressions on peoples faces when I get off my Motorcycle and pull out my AC 3DS.

Honestly I would not be embarrassed for playing any game let alone AC. How is it really different then dressing up in ugly plaid and trying to hit a little white ball into a cup with different sticks? Everyone has hobbies and there will always be people who just don't get it and make fun of those that participate. I just say screw 'em.

I support every one of the AC players here and will gladly stand right with them in the face of ridicule.

I remember reading this and thinking how great that would be to see. I'd stroll right over and ask for your friend code if I saw it!

But yea, sometimes it slips out in convo and you gotta roll with it... It's the first time I'd had laughs though, which is probably how I noticed I'd even done it.

To be frankly honest, I don't see why people think it is weird that adults play AC: NL. It's not just a kid game and is greatly enjoyed by adults, and look at all the adults that play it! When I grow up, you better bet I'll be pulling out my 3Ds to play all the time.

Like everyone says, they don't know what they are missing. :P

I am a 45 year old woman and I LOVE this game. I love the game so much I am building 2 towns. I have ACNL for my 3DS XL and one for my 3DS.*

The first game is in real time and I play as a girl. The 2nd game is played as a guy and the date is November.*

A couple of days ago I was playing the game and my "SIL" called. She asked what I was doing. I told her my neighbor Rory came over and gave me a blue bench.

She said "That is great you have nice neighbors." She asked what we were doing Saturday night. I told her husband and I are going to a new nightclub called Club LOL. I also told her I could not chat long because I had to go pick peaches.*

She said "I did know you had a peach tree."

When my husband came home, I told him about the conversation I had with his sister. My husband fell over laughing.

OMG! That's so funny. So now Club LOL is real, someone could carry a bench and you have a peach tree now. SWEET.
