So I keep seeing people reset for hours to get a "good map" and although I myself probably don't have a good one and won't bother resetting for one now, I am just wondering what it means to have a good map? Why are people resetting for hours! Haha.

It's really just personal preference! Everyone has different things they want their map to have, so they just reset to get a map they like. For instance, a lot of people reset because they have little space for community projects, so they reset to get a map with more open spaces.

I think it's up to the user personally.
A lot of people like their town square in the center.
Something desirable is open spaces and fewer ponds for public work projects.
People seem to also like Retail by the docks so it's easier to sell bugs (something I wish I thought of!)

That seems to be what I'm getting from what other people say anyway.

I reset for DAYS. I consider a good map where the the Re-Tail is near the beach, rather straight river, and the plaza in a decent location. I'm more particular than that so my map had to have the beach on the right, any fruit but oranges, few ponds, and the the Town Hall by the border. I love my layout now, even if I had to reset for a week xD

Haha I am curious..do you have a picture of your set up??

Least ponds = more space for projects, not such a curvey river, same reason. Decent placement of buildings (town hall, re-tail) nearby train station or dock is usually preferred for better transportation (selling, Starting projects etc). Also some people are fussy about the beach And how its laid out, and where the hill is to go down to it)

-shrugs- personally a good map is whatever fits your style though. :)

I wish I reconsidered my plaza position though...

I actually like a little element of having to work around a space, so I limited myself to picking one of the first 4 possible maps. And I ended up really really liking it. Everything is in a great place for me, and I only have to move a few things around to make it convenient for me. But there is some fun in randomization for me too.

I just wanted a small river, least amount of ponds, lots of open space, and good villagers and I was lucky enough to get that in 3 trys.

And now I have a town that I love.

My personal preference for MY town was to have a sideways L shaped river. Took a few resets to get it, but I did.
Little things that can be annoying are ponds(I have 3, one of then is kinda annoying but its no biggie) and rocks. Almost everyone of my rocks is directly next to my paths. Kinda annoying

I reseted for a nice beach with nice waterfalls

i never saw ponds as an issue but I have 3 which is a lot but they're in okay spots

I was resetting for awhile for the fruit and grass shape I wanted, along with river, retail and town tree placement. But I ended up giving up quickly on the first two reasons because I started up the game and saw a villager I really wanted was in town.

I only wanted to have a spot where my house would be isolated like a U shape surrounded like a river, which I got after 1-2 resets.
I wasn't paying attention to anything else really, and everything else worked out for me. My town hall, center, and Re-Tails just happens to all be on top.
Lucky me, but only downfall is horrible villagers.

What I personally looked for: open area, decent river structure (not too bland, not too crazy, space to have three decent bridges), river exiting south, decent placement of town hall/town tree, at least two starting villagers that I really liked.

:3

Working on my bridge set up then going to start an orchard ^-^

Wow your map is awesome.

I have 5 ponds lol. I won't reset though, I still have a decent amount of room (despite my river running through the middle of my town) and I couldn't bear to loose my villagers and start all over again.

I kinda want to reset, but, i'd hate to have to put everything back into the museum and stuff TnT

When i first started AC:NL i pick an town layout i like, then after while i started not to like it, because well there wasn't enough space to put down community projects, i ended up resting my town all over again, my friend hold all my stuff in till i had a good town layout with a lot of space, it took about a day to get a good layout and i was happy that i rested my town. :D i can show you a picture if you want.

It's definitely something that's subjective. Many people look for the least number of ponds possible, some want their river to cut through the town in a particular way, and others want their town plaza to be located on the center of the map. I sort of just wanted my town plaza, town hall, and Re-Tail to be as close to each other as possible. I didn't really feel the need to continuously reset for my 'perfect' town map (I only reset once because I didn't like the face I ended up with), but I do like what I ended up with.

I kinda wish I had a different map. Mine's okay, and I stil made it work out regardless, but I didn't know about the space issues I'd have and there's a long strip of land that's too narrow to put anything on and so it's completely useless. But I've put so much time and effort into it by now that I can't reset.

My main criteria was just that the beach was in one long strip and not divided by the river so I could fish/hunt beetles uninterrupted. I got my wish on that, at least! And although the river is a pain, everything is nice and evenly spaced out so I guess it's not so bad. Still, with ALLLL the customization that's offered now, I wonder why there isn't an option to fill in/create ponds?
