A 5-Star Predicament

I was walking around my island this morning, greeting residents and checking for new hybrids. I noticed a new flower that I thought had white buds, but when I looked closer it was a lily of the valley. I headed back to Resident Services to speak to Isabelle and I was told my island had a five-star rating. This was quite a surprise. I have a couple of spots where my terraforming and decorating are progressing nicely, but I only have 2 ramps, 2 stairs, and 2 bridges. There are only nine residents on the island. I am not about to be featured in a youtube tour of a five-star town any time soon. My island had a four-star rating yesterday. Even that was a bit of a stretch. The main change over the last day or two is that my storage filled up and I had to put a LOT of fish and bugs on the ground to wait for C.J. and Flick. I caught a lot yesterday and added them to the growing maze of aquariums and bug containers. There are about 20 snapping trtles around. They have given me a fright more than once. when I came across them and thought I had run into a huge bug. There are close to that many tanks of oarfish, too. I was happy C.J. showed up this morning. But, now I am afraid to sell off my fish. I have no idea how many of them are needed for the rating or how many I would need to replace with a furniture item to remain five-star. I had no planned on that rating so soon, but now that I am here, I really don't want to be demoted. I am in a quandry.

I felt the same way when I was told I got a 5-star rating.
My Island is nowhere near complete.
I'm not complaining though. The only thing I miss are the weeds. I think they actually made the island look more natural (especially the mountains I dedicated to hiking trail).

I had only decorated 10% of my island when I hit 5 stars, granted I'm dense with my decorating.
The whole "5 star island tour!" Is a joke, it means nothing, anyone can get it in a day.

I probably misread, but do you mean they stop appearing when you get 5 stars, or is it just that you took them all out to have a high rating?

They still spawn. I think 2 per day as far as I can tell.
But I don't think you can have too many if you want to maintain a 5-star rating.
I intend on maintaining one for sometime just for the Lily of the Valley, and then I'll just start growing weeds again.

Ah, see that is what I am afraid of. I am sure there are more items out there than I need. But if I sell off all the fish today and then the bugs when C.J. shows up, I am not sure how much furniture to make to keep up the rating. I guess I will just have to experiment and see.

I wouldn’t worry about it. If you do get demoted after selling the fish you will get back there soon enough. You have the golden can recipe which is the only way to get gold roses. Other than the occasional lily of the valley sprout there are no other perks.

I ended up getting 5 stars as well although it was incomplete, but at least you get the golden watering can diy.

Harvest some Lilly of the valley and put weeds back after, people won't know you don't have a five star island if you don't tell them

It is definitely the fish and bugs! My 5 star comment was explicitly about all the 'wildlife'...

I had 50+ bugs and fish lying around because it took an abnormally long time for Flick to come around [and I had missed CJ..]. Once Flick did arrive and I sold all the bugs, my 5 stars vanished. I compensated by putting down furniture, but I still have a few fish lying around waiting for CJ, so it's likely I'll lose it again, lol.

You get 5 stars when you have a certain amount of outdoor items/furniture combined with the right amount of trees and flowers. So indeed, if the place is full of placed fish and bugs, that's the reason.

If you still have a lot of work to do on your island, you can just throw a bunch of random furniture items (mix of DIY and regular) in areas you won't use for a bit. Getting 5-stars is really not difficult.

If you watch those "5-star Island tour" videos or whatever, a lot of what they do doesn't even count towards the rating (paths and terraforming). It is all about the objects placed and trees/flowers. You also get 15 points per bridge/incline, so if you have a lot of those already, it is that much easier.

Oh and fences, having a lot of fences is an easy way to never have to worry about your island rating.

I guess I’ve just been adding a little each day haha. I really don’t want random stuff thrown around just to have 5 stars. I only have 3 bridges and 4 inclines.

same, my town is stuck at 4 stars permanently it seems... though to be fair I'm horrid at decorating .-. isabelle keeps saying i need more!

I hope they will tweak the island rating system a little bit more so that getting 5-star rating would be more rewarding

Oh, yes. Gold Roses would be great. I suppose I need regular roses first, so that can be my next goal. I loved all my gold roses in NL and look forward to having them in NH.

Well, as I found out today, there are many routes to a five-star island and not all of them involve having beautiful landscaping. However, I would say that the 5-star island tours I have seen online were beautiful. Theplayers has a wonderful eye for design and were very talented. I enjoyed the videos and found them inspiring.

Yupp... I still need some more though. Only got 2 so far.
