10th villager scare.

I was under the impression that nine villagers was the max for New Leaf with the only way of getting a 10th villager only through the camper at the campsite. So I was startled when I saw that I got a 10th villager without using the campsite.

I was doubly startled when I saw where the 10th villager decided to move.

Just barely missing my bush/hybrid garden.

10th can be campsite, invited from another town or randomly due to spotpass / streetpass thing.

Apparently you can get that 10th resident through streetpass or wifi even if you don't have a campsite. I never even knew about the campsite thing, my 10th resident was invited from a friend's town.

I never Streetpass anyone over here. I feel safer knowing that a villager won't random pop up in the middle of my flower field.

But remember if you wifi (either as traveller or host) it has the same effect.

I thought that was only if you talked to a villager moving out?

Because I've tried to steal some villagers from friends but they weren't moving out.

I have had a villager move to my town that used to live in another village. I did not invite the villager. You can get another villager from a wifi town without ever intending to.

As I understand it (and this is kind of how it worked in earlier games) -- once a villager has moved away they're sort of in a holding queue headed outwards, then they can move to any town their mayor (or another character I assume) wifis with or streetpasses. You can't get a villager to move out; you can only pick up a villager who has already moved out. (Which is why it doesn't matter if you talk to villagers, it doesn't make them move out.) Tiffany moved out of my town about a week ago, and a few days ago I streetpassed a load of AC players. If any of them had a space, there's a good chance she's moved in on one of them.
