I have 1x1 paths in my town right now.. I like them, but they do feel a bit cramped sometimes (especially if you line them with bushes or trees).. on a positive note, they take up less room and seem to free up more space in your town. 2x2 paths are definitely better if you intend to be running on them, because it is harder to stay on a narrow 1x1 path when you are running. I think in general, most of the towns I have visited tend to use 2x2 paths
1x1 paths would bug the hell outta me, particularly as I line my paths with flowers.. It means more space, but more accidents unless you line with bushes..
I personally prefer 2x2 paths, but I use a variety in my town. In my main area of town I have 2x2, but leading off to the more secluded parts of town, I have 1x1 cause it feels like it'd fit there more.
My main paths are always 2x2 but I also have 1x1 paths for places I would like paths but they are not high traffic areas. Plus I have water effects that I use as well and those are 1x1. Its a lot of QR codes to place and a lot of work but I love my town. I need to use 3 characters for all of my paths. I could use more but my 4th character I use as a plot placement person.
I use 2x2 with a lego brick path I found (I forget where.) I would only use 1x1 if one of my villagers moved into a bad position where there was only 1x1 space next to them for a path.
I have some 1x1 parts, but I mostly use a 2x2 that can increase to 3x3. Since bridges are 2x4, I feel 2x2 helps a lot with that. In the same way, most buildings are closer to 3 wide if you do more than one as 2 will be off-center thus I often switch between 2x2 and 3x3.
Overall though, I find if 1 has borders, it feels way too cramped as then you are practically walking on them and yeah. If it's a plain path like stones or something without a border, I think it looks fine as just 1. There are some exceptions though.
I always use 2x2 paths, they just look better imo especially since the paths I use have borders on their patterns.
There's also less flower squishing going on with them.
