Extra work, but you can put regular paths underneath to get the effects (plus it shows up on the map!). Really annoying and tedious workaround but it's something I thought of.

LOL, yes I have the same thoughts! I'm grateful that we spoil each other with little details, but it's crazy how some are discovered. I bet the one where Blathers panics when you pull out a bug was discovered on purpose. Like someone knew (or learned) Blathers hated bugs and then "showed it off"...
