I just tested it and it looks like it should work on 3DS as well as on DS and DS Lite. :)

I've only attempted this on my DS Lite. According to the video it's viable on both, but I know the DS Lite features better.

Either take it with an external camera like a phone or purchase a DS capture card for a bunch of money. Any other way they're taking pictures, and the most realistic/common way, is that they're playing on an emulator on their PC.
