I have a bunch of random color ores occupying inventory space. They don't sell for that much. I am also new to ACNL. I heard you can make furniture sets with the at retail. I am not sure how. Can anyone enlighten me please?

Once Cyrus in Re-tail wakes up (which will happen after you sell a certain amount of bells to Reese) he'll be able to customize some of your furniture. If you talk to him he'll say what in your inventory you can customize, and if you have ore on you, you might be able to use that to customize it differently. You don't need the ore to customize but it gives it that extra something.
Also, if you give him 3 gold ore, he'll be able to make a random piece from the golden furniture series.
