My surname is pretty common?
It's O'Malley, and as irony would have it my full name is made of extremely common names, I won't say my first name but I'll say my second since I don't use my middle name online at all (and a google search of it woth my last gives a ton of results). It's Joseph. 2 common names, my first name is even more common that the other 2 though :/

my last name is around the 400's in terms of popularity according to a few sites. But I've never been acquainted with anyone sharing my last name

I know a lot of folks that share my surname, they just happen to be related to me.
It is a Japanese name so it's not too surprising that it's uncommon here in the states, but it doesn't seem like it's very common in Japan either.

I have a very uncommon surname, it tends to me misspelled a lot of the time which can be rather annoying. I've never known anyone else to share the same surname as mine, unless I've typed it onto Facebook whereby only about three people actually appeared with the same name.
