Net Neutrality General Discussion Thread - "Battle for the Net" Edition

Keep in mind that though the FCC has a lot of control here, we can still work towards things at the state level. I honestly think a push towards making internet communications run by all of us for all of us makes sense. (Socialism alert)

But the fact is these telecommunication companies are basically monopolies who just agree not to fight for territory. That is unethical and we need to make other options.

okay wow they voted against net neutrality, wtf. honestly thought it was just going to be another sopa/pipa scare but seem like they are serious :(

let's hope they don't win though...

yeah uhh what happens next ...

You know is bugging me more than the repeal, is people all over the internet saying things like "I'm glad I don't live in America." Yeah America might be having major problems right now, but doesn't mean other countries aren't having their fair share of problems. America is and always will be a great country to live in, no matter who is trying to ruin the foundation of our country, there are always going to be people who are going to fight, and fight hard to make sure we stay great. Sorry, I digressed.

to be fair really bad things keep happening in the us, it's not weird that some people are glad to not live there lol. at least the political leaders of many other countries want to fix the problems rather than just talk about how great they are on twitter

The funny thing to me, is that the FCC and the ISPs actually are so deluded in the mind of greed, that they believe people are actually going to pay to use Google instead of Yahoo. They are going to lose money, not make it.

See it like this. Some of us use ad block. You go to a web site that has a pop up asking you to disable the ad block. A few people will disable ad block, but most will just leave the site. That's how it's going be with ISPs blocking web sites unless you pay. And people will just leave the site. And that's the problem because a lot of sites, small start up sites, won't be able to pay the ISPs to unblock therefore they won't get traffic and people won't be willing to pay extra to access that site.

People cut cable because they got high prices for few choices pay a price for Basic cable, and extra for HBO, now the Internet is going to be like that. Pay a basic price for Verizon approved web sites like Yahoo, but pay extra to use Google. And unfortunately not everyone can 'cut the internet' because people use the net for things like business, jobs, and school are going to be forced to pay in order to use the sites they need for their jobs. And judging how things are going, all the legit Universities in this country are going to have their web sites blocked or throttled, while for profits school's web sites like DeVry will be fine.

I just find it ridiculous that this repeal was even brought up. They don't care that this is going to hurt a lot of consumers, all they are about is money, money, money. You can't take it with you when you die and it's NOT going to help you get into Heaven, where I'm sure a lot of these people aren't going anyways, at least not with the way they are acting right now.

Sorry, I just went off on a whole rant. :/

I didn't think it's weird I just think it's annoying that they are talking about our country like it's always this crazy bad place, when it isn't. People want to live here when the country is doing great, but now that we are in a crisis, all of a sudden "I'm glad I don't live there". People are aware that the entire world is affected by what our President does, right? You're not safe just because you're in another country, especially if a nuclear war breaks out.

Oh we are going to fix this mess. As a matter of fact, it's already starting. Did you see what happened on Tuesday?

We watched it live in art class today. There was lots of screaming and swearing after the vote. We even saw the evacuation happen.

doesn't it still have to work through congress or something?

Not necessarily. The FCC repealed their own regulation. Congress can reverse the deregulation, though, and states can sue.

yeah let's hope it gets reversed/sued/whatever needed though.. or just kill that damn dude who came up with the idea

Let's remember that Ajit Pai is a human with a wife and kids.

Violence will not help in the slightest.

There's a chance that Ajit Pai will now get assassinated.
How the hell are people supposed to access websites for school? It's outrageous and I don't even live in flipping America! This will affect other countries. Websites used primarily in America will shut down and YouTubers who make a living out of creating content could lose their jobs because a lot of the US use YouTube. It's a shame, really.
Hey, at least a bomb threat was called in when Ajit was talking (I saw it myself; it was hilarious).

yeah maybe he should go. this is just going to affect too much to bear.
but net neutrality might get saved sooooo

i'm so stuck. people tell me that they're not going to ruin long distance relationships or ruin the internet, it's just something about profits which yeah i disagree about changing. and then i see posts like OMG THEY KILL INTERNET IT DIE AND AND AND YOUR LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP IS IN DANGER IT GO IT GO FAR AWAY ONE DAY EVERYTHING CAN BE UNDER THEIR CONTROL IF THEY WIN THIS COULD BE THE LAST MEME EVER GUYS
and well, we've lost (for now)
what the **** am i supposed to believe? why am i so afraid? what and why? who can i believe and i don't ****ing understand and it makes me so frustrated, worried, and angry
sorry for ranting, i've been trying to do some research but i don't understand half of it
