let's talk about Tumblr

This thread should be closed before it gets out of hand >_>

I only ever used tumblr for Pokemon and ACNL, nothing else. Though I do respect people who make those fancy ass blogs I have no idea how to do.

we're all kind of agreeing on one thing here so I don't see how it will get out of hand, but if it really does need to be closed then close it lol cause I don't know how

What even is tumblr lol is that where memes are born

Nah, memes are born on 4chan, tumblr is where memes go to die. Followed up by having their corpse paraded around on reddit for a few months after death, a la weekend at bernie's.

google+ is an underground meme making machine, one of my friends on there got his edit stolen by someone on tumblr and it ended up getting 5k+ notes

Tumblr has some funny memes on there, but I'm honestly considering deleting my account soon. The unbelievable amount of toxic thinking on that website as well as the overwhelming amount of depression/depression meme posts that are on there far outweigh my enjoyment of the site. It's a serious mess. I think I get more angry than happy when I actually do log in.

Depression memes are the best tho, we all cope differently

same i love them lmao.

i like tumblr for the anime/manga fandom resources. like a lot of translation groups have a tumblr for their main website. i also used to use tumblr religiously around 2014 or 2015 or so and i made some great friends who shared a ton of common interests so there's that. i just kinda grew out of it i guess but i still go back here and there if i really like a certain anime or something to just look at content. i also used to make edits and gifs on tumblr as well so that really got me to learn photoshop and be really creative so i appreciate tumblr for that. good times honestly.

i really think it depends on where u are on tumblr that you'll encounter toxicity though. there are always those weird pocket of people that you don't encounter if u just stay exclusively on one thing like anime for example

I. Am. 1000%. Done. With. This. Site.
In the past two months I've had it, the following people have followed me.
- a major porn blog
-half naked girls looking for a bf blog
-THREE accounts with nothing on them, made by the same person, who wants to chat on Snapchat
-and yesterday, a blog with a single picture of two naked girls posing together
I have safe mode on, but all that does is censor random AC posts

See that doesn't making any sense to me since the site is always saying how people shouldn't make fun of mental illnesses yet here they are making jokes about mental illnesses.

whenever they add a new feature they just ruin the site more and more i swear. this safe mode is one of the worst thing staff has done in the last year shdjskj
i have so many users (mainly bots) blocked because of this and it's really annoying.
you'd think their Safe Mode™ would be able to catch porn bots and nsfw blogs that havent marked themselves as 18+ but i guess blog titles and descriptions inviting u to have sex and every single post on the blog being marked as nsfw isnt enough to actually know if it's a nsfw blog... like, if they're going to make tumblr Safe why cant they try doing something that would actually be a bit helpful...

it's not a community of like twenty people, it's a social media platform with millions of users... there are a bunch if different communities with different views :<

also i think theres a difference between making depression and suicide jokes (at least if you suffer from those things, otherwise it feels really weird to me idk), and making fun of mental illness. it's not everyone's cup of tea but i personally like depression memes hhh

The meme life cycle is that it starts on 4chan or reddit, goes to reddit, then goes to tumblr, while simultaneously going back to 4chan to become edgier. From Tumblr it goes to Facebook, then it hits TV.

Okay yeah, can Tumblr also get on dealing with their crappy porn bots, like how can you have a site where minors are allowed around yet there's no moderation for porn bots and this stuff happens?

My Tumblr is beautiful and I am in love with it.

See icon in my signature.

Although tbqh it is the scarier side of humanity ngl

I think I first made a Tumblr back in, maybe, 2011?

It's been a long time and a wild ride, I'm pretty sure I've came across almost every community and sub-category on that site. I feel like on the whole, Tumblr is an awful site, rather like a disease, honestly in the way it has the power to make people act a certain way and say certain things (Someone on Tumblr says there 72 genders - heck, guess there's 72 genders now!).

I have nothing against certain political blogs or users, it'd be great if everyone, from alt-right to alt-left could discuss their political beliefs, but that's not the case. It's as simple as saying one thing, before there's 6 call-out posts calling you a racist, a TERF, doxxing you, just for stating one opinion. The identity politics are awful. Not even going into the whole ""LGBT community"" (massive quotations) there, all it is is exposing young and impressionable people to utter lies and propaganda.

The amount of illegal activity that goes on there is pretty appalling too, and it's scary knowing how available Tumblr makes that to children. I remember being 13-15 and getting involved in illegal activity because, heck, I was a young teenager, going through a hell of a lot at that point, and I was exposed to this. Not only that, but I got myself involved in communities that promote serious physical harm, and worsened my physical issues at the time (I realise all this is down to me and not Tumblr, I still do resent it all being there and glamorised so much). Do Tumblr even care about the level of illegal stuff that is posted about on their site? Never mind the massive community of actual pedophiles, anything happening there, just letting them be?

On the plus side, I do feel like it is possible to have a positive experience on Tumblr, I have a few accounts that I use casually, and I don't have much of an issue nowadays. I stay away from tags that I know are likely to only contain drama. I really do like how Tumblr tends to have a "community" for everyone, regardless if their interest is commercially accepted or not, people may not really have an other place to talk about, express, or be involved in certain things, unfortunately that come with the downside of the "MAP" community and suchlike. I feel as an adult, my Tumblr experience is much more pleasant, I do still worry about the young minds being exposed to things they shouldn't be exposed to, though.
