What's with collectables?

So I've been here for a while, but I don't get what's going on with collectables, how they're used.
Apparently I have 10 seashells? What does that even mean?
And can I get rid of them somehow? Or do I keep them forever?

So many questions....

collectibles are just decorative and for fun. people like to obtain them to make seasonal or harmonious patterns under their avatar, or as badges / mementos from forum events...
 
these things are giving me flashbacks to that flea nonsense
