i dont know enough about him to have an opinion. idk if he was one of the reasons why all the europeans were racist and horrible but if he was then uhh Sucky and Bad. n i think it's a bit weird to celebrate that europeans ~Discovered~ america considering what horrible things it led to.

He was such an awful person LMAO. He got drunk and made the cabin boy drive his ship. Oh yeah, and he brought deadly diseases to the natives and enslaved the survivors. So...yeah. Not really a great person to celebrate.

I think the whole debacle over him is virtue signalling. It doesn't really affect anything.

But the name of the day should still be changed.

Leif Erickson was the one who really discovered America.

Actually, the true founder was not even Erikson or Columbus, but I’m thinking Sir Walter Raleigh, whoever settled up Roanoke County. But we didn’t have permanent settlements until 1607 when Jamestown was built.

I agree with having the name changed. We’re not celebrating Columbus unlike MLK day, but we celebrate the fact that the America’s were founded by the Europeans. Most of us that are from the Americas (unless your bloodline has been very isolated) have Spanish/French/English ancestory mixed in there. If the Europeans didn’t come here, we wouldn’t exist. It’s true that the natives were conquered and died of diseases and such, but pretty much every country is founded on some group of people coming and conquering another group’s land

They were talking about discovering the Americas (North and South America), not founding the United States of America. The first Europeans to discover the Americas anyway were the Vikings, but they left. The people who truly discovered America were the North East Asians, who became the Native Americans.

I hope he's in hell (he honestly probably is), he deserves hell, not because of spreading diseases, because he's not going to know that they haven't been exposed to it, but because of the slavery and murder and stealing (I think rape too).

Why would anyone vote that he was cool and a good person?!?!

I mean, we all have Columbus Day even though a) he was overall a pretty terrible person and b) he didn't even actually find America, with Amerigo Vespucci finding it in 1513 and naming it after himself, hence the name America, so overall Columbus Day is pretty trash, but hey, a day off
But really, could we just change the name to something, anything else

A poll without the biases listed right in the options would give you a more accurate reading but I picked the last one regardless. He was a turd.

Honestly how did this awful guy even get his own holiday? Who tf thought it was a good idea? >__>

But then again America has statues of confederate leaders so you know, this isn't surprising afterall...

That is true. But I would also like to let you know that judging people based on today’s standards is bad. I know what they did was wrong back then, but stuff like this is very common at the time. Nobody’s perfect you know. I mean, we have statues of George Washington, and he owned slaves before. But you’re better off honoring Columbus, Washington, and Lincoln (despite their horrible actions) than you are honoring Donald Trump.

I may not support Columbus, but there’s one bad historical figure I supported - Joseph McCarthy. I even think he’s better than Trump.

Really? McCarthy? He was an idiot who was scared of losing office so he accused
fellow politicians of supporting communism. Haven't you heard of McCarthyism?

I supported him because he was an anti-socialist. I am against socialism, whether it’s coming from the left (like Stalin) or from the right (like Mussolini).
