I feel the same way. I would also avoid these types a little more than others because they were grumpy. That being said I was also kinda entertained by their dialogue back then. And it felt rewarding when they finally warmed up to you a little and they were your friend!

When I rented out either the GCN AC at Blockbuster's (anyone remember that? rip), I had no clue about bees in the trees. Chuck laughed right in my face after I got attacked. Sure he was a butthead but I appreciated this blunt jerk mode.
Just think about Resetti and now he's a PWP. Apparently he scared kids and that's why he's optional.
