What ever happened to giveaway towns?

Hey all! I've been away from the game and the boards for about 6 months after getting sick. Finally back into my beloved animal crossing and I noticed the giveaway towns on my list don't really come online anymore. I also have seen almost nothing in the threads about them.
I'm not super surprised. People with giveaway towns make a huge sacrifice to their time and are so so kind to do what they do and I saw a few people take advantage of it. That being said, I actually made some friends through these towns. Playful competitions to see who could get in and grab clovers or bush starts before the other got to it.
Maybe giveaway towns are a thing of the past now but I will miss them. If anyone knows anyone who still does this, I'd love to check it out!

My guess is that the people who made giveaway towns got bored of setting something like that up over and over, so they just stopped. I've never seen one, as I only joined the forums yesterday, but it seems like a very likely answer. Either that or they just kinda lost interest in doing that.
