Animal crossing population growing is how I started playing. I love how original and classic it is. My NL town is going to have no paths and no new fruits to give it that original PG feel. I want to snatch a gamecube from my local resale store here in a few months to start playing the game again.
New Leaf may be the best, but Population: Growing!/GC will always be my favourite. Such a good game. Like you said, it aged gracefully in some areas. In others, not quite.
I don't mind that the town is the only place (but the island) to explore considering how vast and open it is.
