If the Wii Remote died, there will be a blue banner across the screen that says something along the lines of "Communications with the Wii remote have been interrupted". If it's just stuck, it may be that the game froze, but not entirely. I believe I've had something like this happen before in a game.
All you can really do, at that point, is reset the console.
