Lately I noticed prices in games going up, a lot.

Animal Crossing: Wild World is 30 dollars at my local game stop. Used. WITHOUT THE BOX!
Pok?mon HeartGold Remake, bought for 50 maybe? Idr, I didn't buy it. But on ebay it is going for 100 starting out.
I wanted to repurchase these games I enjoyed up until I was thirteen. Which isn't that long ago. Really. Seven years is extremely short lived.

I understand time has passed and things are aging and getting less easier to find. But the Nintendo DS is more of a new gen gaming system...

I am not educated on this at all.
But my bf is going to start stocking up on retro game systems, before the prices get TOO high. And when I get my first job I am going all out.

Is this reasonable to be charged this high for a game?
Like when I was ten (to make this easier, I turn twenty in ab a month) I bought two unopened packs of e reader cards. When my mom told me she threw them away, I looked up the cards I remember having. One has an asking price for 30 dollars PER card. (butch)

that being said can someone please take the time to educate me on the prices for vintage game systems, games, and even not so vintage games that came out in early to mid 2000s.

Please don't say try ebay, they have wonderful deals on lots and I browse the internet a lot whenever I'm bored.

Hello, I'm a huge video game collecter of retro consoles (All Nintedo, some Atari and Sega, Playstation).
I started collecting some years back, prices were much cheeper.

Any specific games/consoles you were wondering about?

I know that the SNES titles are very expensive nowadays.

I agree with those HeartGold/SoulSilver games but seeing as Gen II in my opinion was my favorite and since you can transport all those Pok?mon all the way to Sun/Moon if you want and they had a few exclusives you can't get in later games such as events and stuff I guess I can understand but yeah without case and walker that is a bit too much.

I'd say they have gone up a lot, especially if you want really old systems and for some reason handhelds, even Vita is real high nowadays if you are lucky to find a new, used are a bit better here at least. I'd try going to flea markets or such for real old stuff like Gameboys and to an extent tv-hooked consoles since a lot of people have no idea about values. If you don't mind them being actually Japanese regions I suggest you try Japanese Yahoo auctions/Yahouku! through a shopping service since they can have rares and good deals.

Hello Issi!
I would love to know more about the NES, SNES sytems and games in general. I haven't been to our local resale store in a long time. And when I went last year, which was the last i've been there (they are just so expensive)

And more about the gamecube. A lot of people I know say it sucks compared to the n64... I owned a gamecube and my brother still has our childhood one I cant use (he repaired it himself)

I was surprised when resale had them for 100. Just the game cube. no mem cards, no controller (NOT EVEN ONE!) no box, no manual, N O T H I N G

and Sheila, thank you.

I actually contemplated getting a Japanese game and gaming console because it was a bargain. But I only know English... Somehow I graduated without taking any kind of foreign language. So I would be soooo lost unless I played the game in an American version. I know I could watch tutorials and stuff on youtube too but that's a hassle to me you know?

Oh and last time I checked was one month ago.... This is why I only have two games LOL but I am so cheap when it comes to some games because I paid half of what they were asking for seven years ago and its not like it even has a box, manual, and the poke walker... (which I might have. might not, mom prob threw it out. but I never used it anyways)

Yeah, those foreign consoles could be a bit hassle if you can't read them at all.. I can read basic japanese kana stuff but I think I can manage with my Japanese 3ds xl/ll in the end actually, haha. I think most older ones are region free though so you could play whatever game on them regardless of region. At least pre-Dsi and 3ds era as for Nintendo. I don't know about other region consoles though since I only had like, EU ones from Sony, but the Vita is region-free for physical games, you need a specific account for the region if you want DLC or download games though.

^_^ Have you ever played on a NES or SNES? I personally love the SNES, I think it looks amazing. Like a NES made really beautiful XD I'm not sure why the games are so expensive for it, probably because it's pretty popular now... Kirby Superstar, Zelda Link to the Past, Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country series, Yoshi's Island, Super Mario Kart, Star Fox, ect... So it has a pretty great library. I'm in Canada and the games go for anywhere from $50-$120 depending on the title (I'm talking about most good ones that arent too rare). Also, I will warn you to steer clear of most Mega Man titles for NES/SNES, they are very pricey and there are so many of them, just buy a collection of them if you want for 3DS or something since it's just too impossible to get them. If you really want them you'd probably need to get a Japanese system but as you said it's hard with the different language, not to mention the power supply doesnt work with the electricity here right and it could break the system, not sure if all the consoles are compatible with the power supplies from here either. I actually have a JPN console, it's cool, I need to learn Japanese though XD

Also, when buying an old console, try to find one with a working power supply, since if it comes with a non-official one it usually can work poorly or overheat. And AV cables are important as well, since if they aren't at least high quality it can make the image quality poor.

The NES came orignally with the little box thing thing (not sure the name I forgot, it works inplace of AV cables, the red/white/yellow ones.) and some old NES AV cables (only red and yellow.) but thing is, usually it doesnt have the AV since it was lost or something so if you buy one that only has the box thing you either want to find a good quality third party AV or check if your TV can work for the It (I really wish I could remember the name XD).
NES are very hard to use at times...Games often need repairs as well as the console itself. The pin connecter inside the cartridge solt with get lose and not contact properly, creating it to glitch out and other things. Overall the NES is amazing but don't expect to buy one and have no issues. I even bought a mint game that would not play, though worked in another NES somewhere, though mine is mint so I have no clue why.
More info for NES is the Zapper, Duck Hunt and those games are fun but it only works with the old tube tvs, so if you wanna use it on a flatscreen not the way to go.

The SNES works a bit more dependably, I really love it! It was my first older system (I'm not just biased due to nostaligia though, I actually like every Nintendo system). The controllers are really great, a bit easier to hold since they aren't square like NES. If you get a SNES make sure to get official controllers as they are just so perfect...The buttons on third party and the replacement type copies don't cut it. I think the SNES is a pretty good console...It's a top loader so it works better then NES reading carts and I've only seen one SNES game that didn't work and it was very broken (the chipboard was really lose and it just didn't sit right in the cart). They are sooo expensive now though.

The N64, it's one of my faves too. I wouldn't say it's better then Gamecube, I'd just say it has more big hit titles. Ocarina of Time, Banjo-Kazooie (it's a must imo, if you get an N64 you need it), Starfox 64 (large improvent over it's SNES predecesor), Super Mario 64, Paper Mario (one of my favorite games of all times, also a must buy) and a bunch of others too.
The controllers are amazing for it, but the analog sticks can easily get lose and work poorly, so if you need to buy one with a replaced analog or a third party it's alright, I had a tough time finding ones that weren't too lose.
And stay away from the original Mario Party, it has a minigame that destroys the analog stick XD
N64 is dependable I think and the colors it can come in are really awesome, I just love it so much xD

Gamecube, well, it's the Gamecube not too much to say. Sunshine, Thousand Year Door, Pikmin, Pokemon XD, Melee, a whole bunch of great games. Not as many as the other consoles, though still a great collection of titles.
I think the Gamecube discs are super robut, got the original Animal Crossing disc lying beneath a bunch of DVD boxes for a buck, it was super scratched yet still played! Unbelivable. It's so hardy, I'm not sure what people do to break them honestly.

If you have questions about any consoles just ask me :3 I wasn't exactly sure what to say so I just yammered on about a bit of my weird gamer knowledge XD

Btw, in Canada a new in box Gamecube (just reg indigo, not a special edition one) sold for around...I think it was $800. Crazy!
I think some prices are unreasonable, though some arent much differnt, even less then a new video game at the store. Considering how old the stuff is, it's not a bad deal.

Thanks for all that information! That was really nice of you! Lol I'm going to favorite this page so I have the advice when I need it!

I have played retro systems before but they were never mine. They were my brothers.

I recently paid ?25 for PaRappa the Rapper 2 since it doesn't take kindly to being pirated. Consistently crashes in a cutscene despite the disc being in perfect condition to the naked eye (was as new as you can get for a game from 2002 - still sealed) so maybe it knows that I already tried going the free route.

New games are too expensive. There's no way I'm paying ?40 for half a game, hence why I haven't made it past the Xbox 360.

No problem! Happy to help :D And good idea.

Oh I see, yeah alot of people have played consoles they don't own. I think the best thing to do is see which console you like best, what game library, prices, and then make sure it's reliable enough for you (aka NES glitches ect.).

Where do you live? As in do you live in a country/area that might have garage sales listings or weekend markets?
Garage sales ads might list some games and consoles for "cheap" depending on how lucky you are.

I managed to nab 10 pokemon games (original gb, gba, ds, heartgold in box with the pedometer thing) for $80 AUD a few years ago. Pretty cheap considering a friend bought the same heartgold game set through ebay for $70 and the box got smashed.

Boyfriend also managed to get an Atari 2600 with one controller for $20, and $4 per cartridge at a weekend market.

It mostly depends on luck and perseverance really lol. You might hit jackpot twice a year.

I don't have a preference on which one I want. But i really enjoyed the game play of NES super Mario 3! But I think I will like the SNES more because of the bigger controller

I live in north eastern Ohio, I usually see lots of amazing deals but never have the cash at the exact moment I am looking. If I go back a few days later the deals are usually gone. I seen a NDS lite with four games (sapphire, emerald, ruby, pearl)
I went back on the website to snatch it and someone already bought it.

Some people around here either need to pay an unnecessary bill or sell their things for drugs so there's a few good weekly deals but I am pretty young still and never had a job so I only get money once per two weeks until I can find one... So not all the deals will be there every day. I prefer looking online at the moment for games because online sellers have multiple of one product or I can find lots on ebay. I was literally offered these so many different times I have no clue why I was so hard headed and said no! I could have had the nes and snes by now... I was stubborn because you can get the games on the play store for virtual console. But collecting these consoles would be an awesome idea before the prices rise even more.

I literally gasped when I came back to the resale store (its called the exchange. I'm not sure if its just a NE Ohio chain or not) and pokemon yellow was 60 dollars.

I have a game boy color with no games, I snatched it from my brother and he didn't even notice. Its been five years and counting and he still hasn't noticed. And my 2ds that's pretty much it. i tried to sell it at that store (never again) gladly they didn't take it because i don't have the battery cover

My brother has our Wii and Gamecube. He has a game boy sp (& a micro if he didn't sell that), 3ds xl and a gaming PC he built

he used to have a dream cast and n64

after typing this book i remembered my friend offered me her ds lite she got from her bratty neighbor for free. I'm gonna offer her money for it though because its been a while and she forgot all ab it because shes a busy teen mom so i think 15 or 20 dollars will be decent

and i have no idea if she has a stylus for it or even a charger for that matter

Hey there, hellenkeller! I'm not sure if this is something you have where you live, but I always hunt for video games at thrift stores, flea markets and swap shops. You wont always find what you're looking for specifically, but when you do find something, it's usually at a pretty decent price! The way I collect old games is to buy them when people are getting rid of them. (also don't know if this is something you have where you're at) I try online listing apps like offerup and letgo. People will tend to list a lot of gaming stuff near the end of the month on there, because they need to pay bills or such. If you go on then, you can get nice discounts on bulk sets.

One really good tip for building a collection is to always buy in bulk! So long as you have collateral enough, buying entire collections can save you a ton, especially if the owner doesn't know what's in it. The only other really good tips I can offer are: if you really want it, save up and buy it (it'll only cost more down the line) and NEVER GIVE UP SEARCHING!

Sorry if this seemed like a but of a rant, I just figured the best way for me to give you advice was just to drop a bunch info at once. Feel free to let me know if any of this helps, and ask any more questions you might have!

For the SNES they have a game called Super Mario All Stars + Super Mario World, it has NES Marios 1, 2, and 3, plus the SNES Super Mario World, awesome cart :3

Yes, the SNES controller is really great and nice to hold. The classic one, the dogbone shaped ones are fine but I don't actually have one. They came with the SNES Mini I think, just ignore that XD The reg one is the iconic one.

The games don't look or feel the same on VC, the original way is usually just that little bit more...special. It's worth it to buy them before they become too expensive I think.

If you need to buy replacement parts for newer Nintendo consoles (even a small ammount of gamecube stuff if it's still in stock) go to Shop Nintendo. It's the official Nintendo store for buying extra cases, covers, power supplies and other things like that. So everything you get will be new straight from Nintendo or refurbished by them (basically like new except the odd scuff on casing).

Wow, that's crazy! I got my Pokemon Yellow cartridge for almost 10 dollars! (The price sticker has faded and I can only read the 9 at the beginning) However, I don't remember what store I was at. I just know they had other games for cheap but I was with my great aunt who didn't want to buy very much. It had to be over 5 years ago (Maybe 6 or 7?) since I don't have a great aunt anymore...

Yeah I remembered I bought an original Japanese Pok?mon Green copy for like $5 at some retro store, the carton was a bit damaged but games and everything was in so eh lol could probably go for x10 if not more lol. Don't have it anymore still that was my best deal.

I've recently seen copies of Pok?mon HeartGold and SoulSilver at a second-hand game shop. HG for €55, SS for €50 (or the other way around, can't remember). Just the regular box, no Pok?Walker. I get why though, they are amazing games and I am so grateful I still have mine and the Pok?Walkers, but dang.

I managed to get my hands on a silver GameCube a year or two back with one original controller, one fake, and an amazing library of games including Mario Kart Double Dash, Zelda The Wind Waker (with OoT bonus disc), Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime, Tony Hawk's Underground 1 and 2, Super Mario SUnshine, friggin' F-Zero GX, for €120. Amazing deal, took it instantly and I am so damn grateful and happy that I did. Twilight Princess for GC alone goes for anywhere from €50 to €70 from what I've seen here (I live in The Netherlands). Can't get my hands on any of the main series DS Pok?mon games for less than €30, can't do the same for AC on GC either.

Generally, all the games I've searched for are for GC or DS or occasionally GB/GBA because those are the consoles I own, and while the two former systems are quite expensive to get your hands on games, I recently easily got my hands on Metroid Fusion, Sapphire, Yoshi's Island and Super Mario Circuit, each game priced less than €20. I don't very often buy games for my older systems unless it's a game I've really been looking for (Yoshi's Island, Melee, Wild World).

I dunno but I've never really seen a game go for more than €50 over here unless it's really sought after (Thousand Year Door, Fire Emblem, Twilight Princess). Even classics like Pok?mon RBY sell for about ten bucks over here and occasionally five bucks more than that. Maybe it's just the area I live in, in which case I'm p dang grateful.

Amiibo, on the other hand, sell for quite a bit here. Retail is €16 for most amiibo, give or take a euro, and especially if they're searched for, still boxed, and not very commonly found in retail, they go for thirty bucks or more, especially the Zelda amiibo. Lucky for me the Animal Crossing ones recently went on sale and I can get them new for about five bucks. Let's just say I'm slowly adding to my collection. c:

Well, I just recommended garage sales in particular because the online market is more competitive and there's no guarantee of it's condition by the time it gets to you. Thrift/Retro game stores here match prices to ebay so they become quite pricey anyway.

Maybe Japanese retro game stores is an option if you are considering to buy a console for collection purposes rather than to play (NA region games because of region lock). There are a few chain/online stores that specialise in retro games. I'm not sure how much the consoles are priced because it's based on whether they are functional, discolouration and etc

eg. suntanned? snes + 1 controller for around $40~$50 depending on currency exchange
http://www.superpotato.com/detail/169001015001/

console only / no box or accessories for $15
http://www.suruga-ya.jp/product/detail/267010023001

Yeah the Johto remakes can go for hilarious prices if you find them second-hand if at all, especially if you have the whole pack with Pok?Walker and all that jazz.
