So I'm applying at a fine dining restaurant and I would like some pointers from anyone who has worked in a place like that. How is the training? How many tables did you have? Etc. I have only worked in unprofessional awful casual Asian restaurants that barely trained you (I was "trained" by a trainee at one of them). I want to be prepared for all the differences so let me know please? :) Even if you worked casual, as long as it was a professional atmosphere, I'd like to know.

Just a warning I guess, there is A LOT of drama usually. Shift VS Shift for the most part. But you probably experienced that at the other restaurant, it doesn't stop when you go to a fancy one. I've not worked at one but there is a fancy restaurant at my work and many of my friends have worked there. Also the most important thing is usually staying pleasant no matter how the customer might infuriate you, and pay extra attention to how you keep yourself, like ironing your clothes and having your hair put up nicely, I know even at the snack shack I worked in the casino I got written up twice for having "loose" hair even though it was put up, so yeah.

:O What qualifies as loose hair? I have a lot of baby hairs that will never be long enough to tie or even pin back...

I'm prepared for the other stuff, though. Hopefully there is no drama. The restaurant I'm applying for is well known for taking care of their employees and having emphasis on a family culture within the staff. That's actually one of the reasons I want to work there. I've been bullied and taken advantage of at the other places and I want a place that respects me and the effort I put into the job.

For me loose hair was like bumps that weren't "secured" apparently even though they never fell out, and then when I got bangs I had to pin them back even though a co-worker had un-pinned bangs... That sounds really awesome though, I hope it works out and that there is no drama!

Ugh I hate when the rules don't apply to everybody. That just sounds like nitpicking. At one of the restaurants, a guest complained about a hair on her sauce and what the owner did was have all servers wear hideous hairnets from then on.. Oh, but not the chefs in the kitchen, where the food spends most of its time before its served to the customer! Lol. That sucks you were written up for that. It sounds just ridiculous :(

know ur cutlery! it sounds dumb but i didnt know the difference between a soup spoon and a desert spoon, i also didnt know the whole layout of a table setting

That's a good tip! Hopefully they teach me those things rather than expect me to know. Although I don't believe they're the type of restaurant that has like.. 4 forks and 6 spoons lol. Hopefully not anyway

that's totally true! i found that a lot of my training was 'learn on the job' lol but don't be scared to ask questions or anything! and good luck! i complain about working in a restaurant a lot but it's actually pretty fun
