I'm asking mostly the people who have had the original 3DS XL and have upgraded to the NEW 3DS XL. On the old system, the stylus was on the side, and it felt very natural to take it out and use it. Now on the new system, it is on the bottom, and whenever I've used my boyfriend's, it has felt awkward and unnatural to take it out. So is this something you get used to and will it feel more natural over time? Or do you guys still find it awkward even after having your system for a while?

I've adapted to it. Now I think the stylus placement on the 3DS is weird.

I think side placement makes more sense and would be more comfortable, but I don't dislike the positioning on the bottom.
But I went from the original 3DS placement on the top, to the new 3DS on the bottom, so I've only seen improvement, haha ~

I never had the 3DS XL, just the 3DS, and I guess it is a little awkward, but it is second nature to me now. I don't find it to be a major difference. What's been weirder to me is the moving of the power button, though I like the new placement a lot more.

I actually don't like the power button being on the outside, tbh. I keep my 3DS in my bag to get play coins and it has me worried that it'll be bumped the wrong way and turn my system off while one of my games are in sleep mode, and it might corrupt my game or make me lose my progress.. I guess I could always exit my games before putting in sleep mode, but sometimes you just don't have time for that lol.

Yeah, I've thought of that, but I don't use it that way, so it works great for me. I just rock my 3DS to get play coins. Much quicker!

At first I thought that the stylus placement was weird and didn't feel right, but after a year I've gotten used to it and like a more.

Lol I feel guilty doing that so I prefer doing it the "right" way. Haha :p But when I have split shifts, I have a 4 hour break where I can really do nothing at all so I always have my 3DS with me in my bag. And a game like ACNL is kind of annoying to have to quit and load up again and again, since you have to keep talking to Isabelle and go through the usual dialogue. But hopefully there won't be any issues with the power button :) Stylus placement was my main concern anyway, everything else, I can live with. And it seems as though you get used to it anyway so I really have nothing to worry about I guess ^_^ Thanks!

No problem! Yeah, I have no guilt about that. lol It is silly that they make you work for playcoins, so I say why not? And yeah, you'll get used to it.

I was so against upgrading to the New 3DS for the longest time since they changed the placement of things such as the stylus and I preferred the placement on the original 3DS. I eventually gave in and got a New 3DS as several new games were starting to run pretty slow on my old one plus after 1000s of hours of use my hinge was starting to crack. At first I hated the New 3DS layout I'd always go reaching in the wrong place for things like the stylus. Over time though I've gotten used to it and its not bad actually. I definitely still prefer the old 3DS in terms of layout but the New 3DS is more speedy and has better 3D and you get used to things being in different places.

I've gotten used to the new placement but it would've been nice if nintendo just kept it on the side.

I loathe the stylus placement on the New 3DS XL, as well as the button layout. I have an original 3DS XL as well as a 2DS and I find the New 3DS XL to have the absolute worst, most inconvenient configuation of the three. Because of how aggravating the power button location, in particular, is to me, I use my newest console the least. I have pressed the power button more than once unintentionally, in addition to the handful of times it was pressed whilst in my bag (before I decided to just leave it at home and use the older one instead).

I am left handed and this may be at least partially why adapting to the New 3DS XL design has been so frustrating for me - reaching for the stylus has gone from something easily done without interrupting the flow of ACNL gameplay to something I have to juggle the console in my hands to get access to the stylus and then again when returning it. I've also knocked the power button when doing so as I'm using my right hand to get /return the stylus and I'm a lot clumsier with fine-motor tasks with that hand.

I don't regret buying it, but I certainly won't be buying another console with this layout. I've never felt a need to "test" out one before buying before, but I'll probably do that for future ones just to make sure I won't have that level of frustration again.

Oh no! :( I'm so sorry you aren't liking the New 3DS XL layout. That was really the main reason why I never upgraded. I was hoping never to upgrade until maybe they came out with a new and improved model with a better layout, but I kind of have to now. Honestly, if it weren't for the built in NFC reader, I would have stuck with just getting another regular 3DS XL. I can only imagine how much more inconvenient the stylus location is for left-handed folks.. :( I don't know why Nintendo just had to mess with a good thing. How long have you had your New 3DS XL?

I went completely blank about when I bought the New 3DS XL lol, I knew it was sometime last year but that was it. Luckily I posted about it here - http://www.belltreeforums.com/showt...-is-your-3DS&p=6879493&highlight=#post6879493 - so I know I bought it sometime in August/first half of September. I've had it at least 7 months now, and I still haven't adjusted to the different design. I don't think I ever will, now. Too bad :/

I'm happy using the external NFC reader - well, happier to use that than I am the in-built one in the console I find so frustrating to use. If my old 3DS XL starts wearing out or something then I'll probably use the New one more. But unless or until then, it's going to sit there mostly as decoration lol.

I think the different stylus position probably has some reasoning behind it - whether the internals needed to be laid out in a way that meant the old length + placement of the stylus couldn't fit, or their research suggested people would prefer the new placement. I obviously don't like the change, and I really hope they revert future designs to more user-friendly ones. But a change like this isn't usually made just for the sake of change, there's some logic for it (it may not be *good* logic, but that's a different problem!).

Anyway. I hope you don't find using the New 3DS XL as tough as I have. I think you'll adjust to it in time, especially as you're not left handed (I assume, as you'd have probably mentioned that in reply).

:)

Omg, you have the HDD one <3 That's one of my favourite ones! At least if it isn't getting much use, it's doing some good by looking pretty as decoration :p

Yeah, I know there had to be a reason, but it still sucks lol :p And yes, I'm right-handed, so perhaps I won't have as much trouble as you did. It's really too bad that left-handed people are at a disadvantage when it comes to these things :(

Yes! It's so pretty!!! I was really tempted to buy it even when I had no interest in HHD. I'm glad I finally caved and bought it, even though it's more of a paperweight than I expected haha.

And yes, being left handed can make things tougher than they need to be for a lot of random, unexpected things. At least a gaming console isn't as dangerous to use as as stove or oven! :D

I've never ever seen that edition in stock, or else I wouldn't have been able to resist :'(

There should honestly be a company that specialises in left-handed everything!

It didn't bug me as much at first because I honestly could not remember where the old placement was, but now that I took a look at my old 3DS XL again, it kinda bugs me.

Should the tiny pin of a New 3DS stylus wears off just enough, that stylus would constantly fall off whenever holding the system upright. That's something to keep in mind of if you're using this accessory extensively, especially if you're going to use the same New 3DS for at least a couple of years.

I had this situation happens on both my Wii U GamePad and my vanilla DS, although theirs stylus holders is located above them.

Thanks for the warning! I'll definitely be careful with that. I didn't even think about that as an issue lol
