Why does it cost a lot to have the ability to make a group?

Cha-ruuueeee. I think it's because it's this really huge thing, you're getting a lot of people involved and you get some new priveleges like starting discussions, group activities, etc.

They used the be cheaper (4,200 TBT Bells), because back when we moved to vB no one cared too much for TBT Bells so 4,200 was a huge amount back then because the collectible market didn't exist so the only way to gain TBT Bells was through posting, but then once TBT Bells hit it off, it wasn't too hard to gather 4,200 TBT Bells, and everyone and their dog was making a group, simply for the sake of making a group - and that's not how groups were intended to be used. They were meant to be something that only a few users had, and actually had meaning behind them. So once the TBT Bell market got reevaluated, the prices of groups went up to 42,000 TBT Bells, and became a limited stock item.

The original intent for groups were for users to pool their TBT Bell together and have their own clan, so the price was raised to better reflect this in the sites current market.

As Jake said, the biggest reason behind the price is that there's no point a group existing for just one person. So if you want to make a group happen, you can pool together your bells with others who are interested and split the cost.
