I understand your hesitation to trade. I've really only had one really bad experience with trading so far, and it's a shame because negative experience can overshadow positive ones. Fortunately in my case, I have had an overwhelmingly positive experience trading. I have "met" so many kind and wonderful people through trading, and they have warmed my heart so much that the positive definitely outweighs the negative.

In any case, when I send my trades I protect all cards in Penny sleeves. Depending on the amount of cards that are traded, they will be put into a semi hard top loader (usually only 3 or less otherwise they get too squished). For medium trades I can store the cards in a recycled cardboard amiibo pack. Whatever I use (top loader or amiibo pack) is put into a thank you card. I ship all my cards with a non-machinable surcharge stamp, so they are not forced through letter sorting machines. I also write or stamp "do not bend" on all of my envelopes.
