Why does the South have bad statistics?

the South will rise again baby!!! hehe jk.

I love my Tennessee though! music city baby!! wooooo!! Nashvegas!!

At least we southerners have right-to-work laws, lower debt per capita, more religious people, and lower taxes. These are the downfalls the Northeast has.

I think that's only a 'pro' if you're a religious person...Many non religious folk would equally regard that as a 'con'.

I'm not from 'Murica' though, so I can't really make an assessment. The only 'real' thing I've seen of the south is a Top Gear American Road Trip special when they drove through some southern state and got harassed and attacked for what was written on their cars. It seemed really homophobic from what seemed like religious reasons.

"These people shot their own welcome sign, what are they going to do to us?"

Oh yeah, I remember that episode. But to be honest, you have to remember that Top Gear is very much so set up so they do tend to show the bad stuff because... You know, the bad stuff is funnier. Although what happened to them was pretty disgraceful especially since they wrote pretty peaceful messages on their cars (only to provoke a reaction, mind you) and I know the south of America are very... Well, strictly religious, so it's no wonder homophobia and racism is such a problem there. :\ More religious people isn't always a good thing, though. Religion is usually the cause of most wars, you know. Nothing wrong in people having their own beliefs, but it's when it starts to cause a negative effect that it's.... Well, I guess that speaks for itself.

I see what you mean in places in cities like Miami and Atlanta, but I don't think Texas is too bad. Even though there was a man who dumped another man at a 7-11 Nearby. Thankfully he lived, though.

Yea, Top Gear is more set up for entertainment value rather than an actual informative auto show (which is why I watch it, I have no actual interest in cars) but that's one of the few things that seemed genuine rather than something they set up to happen.
They expected a reaction, that's why they did it in the first place, but I don't think anybody knew they were going to get THAT reaction o_O

I personally can't stand religion as a whole. If it didn't exist, a whole lot of serious problems and events wouldn't have existed in the first place. But this isn't a religion thread...

The South has had a history of violence from both the colored and White community. There will still be violence. There are a lot of Christian extremists in the South that are stubborn enough to not accept science by not letting their kids get vaccinated and learn the theory of evolution. The South primarily is rural, so education is not available everywhere
These are just things that I learned about; I'm not South bashing.

did you just say "colored" community????

To be totally honest. I'd be so scared to move down south. Unless it's the east south. The west south is awful. Arizona it's legal to kick somebody out of your store or business for being gay. And a bunch of other messed up laws. Texas is very racist.... I've met so many people from there. Cali is the only decent state in the south east.

Arizona is a western state. It doesn't go under the Southern US. But it is in one of the same regions Texas is in - the Southwestern US.

I may be proud of being a southerner, but there are some stuff I do not agree with as I think the Northeast is better in those areas. At the same time, I'll point out what the south doesn't have that I shame the northeast for.

Here are the stuff the south has that I'm not proud of (besides the stats):

  • Racism
  • Homophobia
  • Super fattening foods
  • Hilly large cities (Little Rock, I'm looking at you)
  • It once allowed slavery
  • It once had Jim Crow laws
  • The KKK

And here are the stuff I'm proud of the south (besides the religion):

  • Right-to-work laws (you have the right to work without a union, even in a unionized business).
  • Little or no gun control
  • Less support for universal healthcare
  • Low taxes

Stats show that the south is more unlivable, but I think cities and states are more unlivable when there are more left-wing people (gays are fine, but not socialists).

Moreover, This is all crap.

Everywhere sucks, people die, people kill people, people are fat, people are skinny, people are addicted to bad things, people hate other people for no damn reason other than how they look, people hate other people for no damn reason other than things/people they like, people are a-holes, people are dumb, people thump on a book older than their their blood line, people are people and SUCK.

Let's not just point to one area let's look at the whole damn picture. I think antarctica is the only landmass free of this crap, most of the time. Maybe it's time to move to the moon.

I've lived "south" my whole life. I'm from the down under, I live in Texas, I'm moving to Bivaria (south Germany).

If you gotta problem with "southern people" we gonna fite.

(gays are fine, but not socialists).

haha, lovely

why do we need more threads you know are going to get political? obviously you like discussing how great the south and republicans are but it just makes everyone fight.

as for why the southern states are bombing in all of these categories, I wouldn't know. maybe google it, I'm sure you'll find research papers with more information than an animal crossing forum. if it's ranked low in education, that will usually lower things like poverty and crime rate, etc. so it's a cycle that will be hard to get out of.

also to everyone else; all southerners are not bigots. that is irony at it's finest.

@WonderK: please don't get them going on healthcare for the love of god

And why is that? I thought the politics was what made the stats bad, but it's more about the culture problems. The reason why I brought up politics is because of why I rather stay in the south rather than move.

You realise Unions keep people from being FIRED for no reason and are for job security and you can LITERALLY be fired without cause in a Right to work state.

You're proud to live in a state with no gun control!? You realise that this means that gives gangs more access to guns thus murder is HIGHER

I'm not even gonna touch on the universal healthcare thing

Texas has AMAZINGLY HIGH taxes.

And EXCUSE ME. " I think cities and states are more unlivable when there are more left-wing people (gays are fine, but not socialists)." is wow. I have an issue with right wing people and how they insert their church into my state and how they say I can't have birth control for my SERIOUS medical issues but MEN CAN GET VIAGRA ON THEIR INSURANCE POLICY and how they think people are all freeloaders on the teet of the government until they need it and RUSH LIMBAUGH but I'm not sitting here saying that being in the same city or state as them makes it "unlivable" and calling them commies or anything like that. That's RUDE. Not all left wingers are gay (I happen to be gay but here nor there) and not all left wingers are socialists.

That is wrong of you.
