Game Over. The Company of Thorin Oakenshield Win!

Observers Chat | Mafia Chat | Action List

Introduction:

Welcome Dwarves, Elves, Hobbits and Goblins alike to this special Middle Earth edition of TBT Mafia.

The year is 1341, by Shire reckoning, and Bilbo Baggins sits at the front step of his home in Hobbition puffing out smoke rings. Bilbo, as you may know, was a perfectly ordinary Hobbit to which nothing out of the ordinary or unexpected ever happened. That is until Gandalf the Grey whisked him off as the burglar in the Company of Thorin Oakenshield. This is where our game takes place and the legendary Quest for Erebor Begins.

Mafia is a game of the uninformed majority versus the informed minority. To elaborate, the game is divided into two teams: the Town (Company of Thorin Oakenshield) and the Mafia (Forces of Evil). Mafia know who each other are, and can coordinate their actions privately. Town players on the other hand don't know anything other than their own role. To compensate, there are many more Town than Mafia. The objective of the game is for Town to lynch all of Mafia before it is too late. The game is divided into repeating phases of Day and Night. Day revolves around voting for a player to be lynched. Night is reserved for Mafia to make their kills and certain players to use their special abilities.

This edition of Mafia will also contain a third team, the Serial Killer. The Serial killer acts alone, with the sole aim of being the final player alive. Active powers in the game along with the roles will be outlined in further detail below.

Be warned - Mafia requires a time commitment. This generally depends on the player, but at minimum 30 minutes a day of solid effort is required. As part of the time commitment, Mafia requires a great deal of reading. Most people are actually quite poor at reading comprehension and playing Mafia is a great way to improve your reading ability, as well as your writing and ability to think and argue logically.

ROLES

This game uses a semi-open setup. These are all the possible roles in the game. I will not disclose how many of each role there are. There is no guarantee that all roles will be used. A player's exact role will be revealed upon their death.
Players will be randomly assigned roles just before the game starts.

The Company of Thorin Oakenshield

Dwarf (Townie)
You are a regular member of the company attempting to reclaim the Dwarven city of Erebor. Your role is to use your voice and your vote to send the forces of evil back into the abyss whence they came.

Wizard (Detective)
You are a Wizard, yielding from the white shores of Valinor, sent to help the inhabitants of Middle Earth overthrow evil. Once per night phase, you can pm the name of a player to a host and discover their role.

Great Eagle (x-shot Vigilante)
You are one of the Great Eagles sent to watch over Middle Earth by Manw?. Owing a debt to the wandering Wizard Gandalf, you align yourself with the Company on their quest for Erebor. You have the ability to strike down on you foes with lethal force, once per night, an undisclosed number of times. If you are roleblocked, your attack will be refunded. It will be revealed in your role PM how many times you can attack in the game.

D?nedain Ranger (Veteran)
You are a D?nedain Ranger, descendent of the ancient N?men?rian race of old. Tasked with patrolling the North, you have seen more than your fair share of battle. Your experience as a ranger gifts you with two night lives. Your job is to network well, get vital information out to town and cause the Forces of Evil to waste hits.

Elf (Doctor)
You are one of the angelic Elves currently residing in Middle Earth. Every night you can PM the name of a player to a host. You will protect that player from one hit for that night. You cannot protect yourself or protect the same person two nights in a row. Both you and the person you protect will be informed of a failed hit - the Company will know nothing of this event. If you protect a D?nedain Ranger and they are hit, your save is used up before their extra life.

Bilbo Baggins (Jack of all trades)
You are the exceptionally sharp Hobbit Bilbo Baggins from under the hill. You have several roles within the game. You act as a one-shot Vigilante, one-shot Doctor and a one-shot Detective. Once per night, you can use one of your roles until they are each expended or you meet some form of misfortune. When all of your actions are used, you will effectively become a Dwarf. Each of your actions behaves in the same manner as their respective roles above. Your job is to make up for losses within the Company.

Tom Bombadil (Lynchproof)
You are Tom Bombadil. You got left out of the movies, aren’t even in the Hobbit and everyone seems to stop reading Fellowship at your chapter. You have been living in the old forest for a long time and won’t be leaving any day soon. You are entirely Lynch-proof. Town will not be let in on this fact so make your best effort to stop them wasting a lynch on you, if your singing starts to get on their nerves. At night you are as vulnerable as any other member of the Company.

Elrond (Town Reviver)
For those that read the books, you are one bad mutha. For those that watched the movies, you are that guy who wasn’t evil even though Hugo Weaving played him. Bearer of the great ring Vilya, you have the greatest healing power within the game and the ability to bring back one dead player immediately after their death. This Power can be used only once and is activated by a PM to the host with the name of a recently deceased Company aligned player. If you receive this role, constant vigilance is required at the end of each night and day as the power will not work more than 2 hours after a player’s death. The downside to your role is that players in the main thread will know of the deceased players role after their revival.

Radagast (Bus driver)
You are Radagast the Brown Wizard. Despite Sarumans best efforts, you have spent far too long in Mirkwood and all the subsequent mushrooms consumed have addled your brain. At night, you may pick up two players and take them for a ride on your bunny sled. But at the end, you deposit them at the wrong stops. In practical terms, you switch the positions of the two players. So if A was to be inspected and B was to be killed by mafia, B is now inspected and A is killed. You can do this two times a game, and can't bunny sled yourself (or who would drive the bunny sled).

Skin Changer (Miller)
You are fortunate enough to be born with the monstrous ability to turn into a bear. Unfortunately, however, your immense bear form strikes undoubted fear in the hearts of all who see you while changed. Despite this, you are 100% good and 10000% against anything Goblin. If rolechecked, you will be returned as Goblin (and a big hairy Goblin at that). Neither you or the Company will be told of this role and it will only be revealed upon your death.

The Forces of Evil

Goblin (Mafia Goon)
You are just a minion within the armies of darkness. You have nothing but your voice (or growl) and your vote to help your team put an end to the Dwarf scum and their allies. Your group ability allows you to kill off players during the night, including your own kind.

The Necromancer (Godfather)
You are the wicked Necromancer of Dol Guldur, better known as Sauron the morbidly evil lieutenant of Morgoth. You have the ability to choose what role you will return as when checked by a Detective. This must be done on day one or else you will revert to the default Dwarf role. Once chosen, your role is fixed for the remainder of the game.

Spawn of Ungoliant (Roleblocker)
You are one of the Spiders of Mirkwood, descendent to the great primordial beast Ungoliant. Every night you can PM the host with the name of a player. That Player will be unable to perform any actions during the night. You cannot Roleblock the same player two nights in a row.

Shaman (Doctor)
You may not be a canon healer in the Middle Earth world, but hey, I needed a cool title and that was the best one Gallows had. This role is in effect the same as the company aligned elf role. Each night you can PM the name of a player to the host. This can be a member of your own Force or someone within the Company.

Smaug the Dragon (Suicide Bomber)
You are great worm Smaug who ravaged the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor by laying waste to its citizens and plundering its riches. One time only during the game you can swoop down in the night and eat a player along with any others that were interacting with them via action during the night. This will kill the player regardless of their role along with any other player involved. Once your action is used, you yourself will perish.

Master of Laketown (Framer)
You are the devious Master of Laketown. Your only care is not the welfare of your begrudged citizens but the gold currently lining your pockets. Each night you can PM the host with a players name. That player will return as Goblin to any rolechecks during that night. You cannot frame the same player two nights in a row.

Killing Power (KP) is # of Evil Forces/2 rounded up, with a minimum of 1 KP. KP is calculated at the start of the Night phase. The Forces of Evil must send me the names of who they want to kill before the night ends. One person can submit all of the kills. Failure to submit all kills will result in a public announcement that the Forces failed to use all their killing power. To avoid this, you must tell me if you are withholding a kill. Forces of Evil can target their own.

Serial Killers

Gollum (Serial Killer)
You are Gollum and willing to do just about anything to get your Precious back. You have the ability to sneak up on players and wring out their nasty little necks each night throughout the entire game, once per night only, by sending the name of your kill through PM to a host. You win once both the Forces of Evil and the Company of Thorin Oakenshield have been utterly destroyed, after which you will be announced publicly and exit the game victorious. As a one-person team, it is up to you to choose who to align with and what pm circles you may attempt to infiltrate. Upon victory you will also receive an exceptional TBT One Ring Collectable (Just kidding).

Powers

I choose the Mortal Life

This is a passive effect, in which you and another player will be linked together. If one of the linked players dies, the other will be left so distraught that they themself will die of a broken heart. No manner of protection can save them from this fate. Any player can be linked together across factions. Though they will be told by PM that they are linked, their own allegiances will not be revealed to one another. The number of linked players in the game will not be revealed, however, there will never be any links greater than two players together. If a player is modkilled, any player linked to them will be spared as they will realise how lame their lover actually was and move on in life, however short that may be. This is a power that may or may not be implemented in the game.

Company of Thorin Oakenshield win conditions: Eliminate all Forces of Evil along with all serial killers.
Forces of Evil win conditions: Equal or outnumber the Town with all serial killers eliminated.
Serial Killer win condition: Retrieve the preciousss (aka. Eliminate all players).

Rules:

Cheating:
Cheating includes (but is not limited to):
1. Posting after death. You may have one polite goodbye post, but it may not contain any potentially game-changing information.
2. Ruining the game by doing something like handing out your mafia's member list to the town.
3. Logging on to someone else's account to get their role or looking over someone's shoulder to get their role.
4. Posting screenshots of your inbox.
5. Posting or sharing any PM you receive from a host.
6. Getting yourself modkilled to help your team. Your non-majority-decided death may not be used as a bargaining chip.
7. Signing up more than once using smurf accounts.
8. Offering favours/items/bells outside of the game for ingame information.
9. Sharing accounts with other players.
10. Posting a false role PM phrased as if you received it from the host. You can still fake roleclaim, but you cannot make it look like you are posting a PM you received from the host.
!!! ANYONE CAUGHT SHARING SCREENSHOTS FROM OBSERVER, PM, SCUM CHAT, ANYTHING WILL BE BANNED!!!
Cheating is not tolerated here as it ruins the game for everyone. The mods and admins here CAN take action.

Time Cycle:
This game will follow an approximately 48 hour day and 24 hour night cycle. In case I am not able to post around deadline, any votes after the 48 hour mark will not count and the game will be put on halt until the night post is up. The deadline will always be 2am GMT (9pm EST). Actions/votes will be accepted up to and including the posted time, but not after.

Posting:
Mod Font:
This is the mod colour. It is reserved for the host. Please do not use it.

Question Font:
This is the question colour. Use it to ask the host questions about the rules in public. You can also PM me.

Activity:
You must post in this thread once per full day/night cycle and vote every day while you are alive. If you fail to do so, you will be modkilled.

Spam:
Spam is not tolerated, nor is any off-topic material. This also means you should condense your posts when possible. 15 one-liners in 30 minutes is unacceptable.

Editing:
Editing is not allowed for any reason. Editing will result in a warning. After that, you will be modkilled. While I ask for everybody to post as concisely as possible, post again if you have to edit anything. The board software automatically merges the posts anyway.

Inappropriate posts:
Mafia games can get heated and emotional. Please keep it civil and remember that what happens in Mafia stays in Mafia. Don't let things spill over to the rest of the forum, it's just a game. If you are unhappy with a player's posts, PM me first. Only if you are dissatisfied with the outcome should you involve the TBT staff.

Play to win.
That said, you should try your best to help your team win while you are alive and in the game. However, this does not mean that you should try to win by being a jerk to the other players so they all want to quit playing.

This also means that you cannot leave the game without a good reason. These situations will be dealt with on a case by case basis. PM your host if you need to leave the game.

You have been warned.

Banlist:

This game uses the officially enforced banlist. If you are modkilled for any reason, you will be subject to a minimum one game ban. The ban length will depend on the reason you were modkilled. Real life problems that pop up that require you to leave the game will be punished minimally. Things like getting yourself modkilled on purpose to use your non-majority decided lynch as a bargaining chip will earn you a lengthy ban.

Voting rules:

1. This game will use Majority Lynch. For those of you familiar with IRC Mafia, it is the same system. When a player attains over 50% of the vote, they will be immediately killed and Day will end. (For example, with 14 players alive, a player requires 8 votes to be lynched).
2. If the deadline is reached without a majority, nobody will be lynched, and all players who did not vote will be modkilled. You may choose not to lynch, but you must make this clear (##Vote: No Lynch).
3. Voting is done in a separate thread, located here. You may announce and discuss your votes in this main thread, but only votes in the Voting thread will be counted. Do not PM me your vote.
4. Please vote in the following format: ##Vote: Username. Votes not done in the correct fashion may not be counted. I will update vote counts whenever I get the chance.
5. If you want to change your vote, first type ##Unvote followed by your new vote ##Vote: Username. You can change your vote at any time and as much as you like (within reason) up until a majority is reached.
6. No conditional voting.
7. You may vote for yourself. You may not vote for anyone dead or outside the game.
8. Voting is mandatory.

Curious bystanders can PM me if they want the link to the observers' quicktopic.

I was just thinking how a LotR/Hobbit version of the mafia games would be fun~ c:

The Shaman can protect a person from all night actions, so does that include rolechecks and being bussed?
