Your experience with villager gifts?

I'm sure many of you have noticed the option to give your villagers a gift while talking to them. What is everyone's experiences with them?

Ive noticed villagers like some gifts better then others, for example sylvia did not like it when I gave her a common butterfly.

most villagers seem neutral when given my native fruit (peach).

most villagers seemed to like getting a cherry salmon, (maybe rarity plays a role)?

ALL of my villagers seem to really apreciate it when I give them fossils.

I mostly give my villagers clothes and furniture and they always have positive reactions. Though I gave Phoebe a black bass once and she liked it, so I'm not sure about rarity.

i think my villagers have liked all the gifts i’ve given them - they didn’t complain at all and seemed thrilled lol

I've noticed that some villagers tend to give me items in return, but others usually give bells (looking at you, Diva).

For that reason, I've stopped giving presents in person, because I really want an item in return in order to build my catalogue. If I wanted bells, I would just sell my items to Tommy and Timmy. So instead, now I always mail my villagers their presents in a letter.

They almost always appreciate any furniture, but sometimes they seem extra excited. I wonder if villagers have favorite colors and styles, like in New leaf.

I haven't tried giving them anything except furniture so far. But once their houses are decorated how I like, I'll probably start sending them foreign fruit instead.

I gave my jock village exercise related furniture twice, and both times he got REALLY excited

can't say much since i've only given them clothes to wear (positive responses, too), for them to only later display it in their house lol

So far, I've just given them fruit because I don't want to clutter their houses with fish and bugs. Maybe if I get more duplicates of clothing, I'll hand them off.

I haven't had a negative reaction yet but I'm being more careful about what I give them because I saw a villager with a man-faced stink bug in his home... Oops!

I regifted Rowan a basketball shirt he gave me DAYS ago and he said to me "this looks strangely familiar" AND I NEARLY DIED lol I was not expecting that at all

I've been giving my Louie exercise equipment which he loves. He runs up to me several times a day to give me gifts now.
