Villager changed back to default clothes...?

I gave Genji glasses and a shirt and he wore both all yesterday till I traveled to and back from a friend's island just now. Is this a glitch?
I thought a big part of animal crossing is changing them from their default clothes/furniture/etc. to something else was to show that they've become part of your island/home/etc..?

the villagers change their outfits randomly across the day, I've noticed them change into sports clothes when they work out etc.
sometimes they wear the clothes you give them sometimes not, afaik it's just randomized? I could be wrong but that's what I've observed from my villagers

Ah okay thanks. I probably overreacted but I was so happy to see him in a full outfit of what I gave him LMAO

The villagers have a wardrobe, and they cycle though their clothes.

I gave Sylvana a sweater several days ago, and now she wears it about half the time, with the other half in her starter shirt. I also gave Flo a hat a week ago, and she wore it that day and hasn't worn it since. I'm pretty sure the frequency depends on how much they like the clothing- Sylvana had the happy flower reaction, whereas Flo was just like "oh, this is a hat."

Also, if your villagers have a physical wardrobe in their house you can check what apparel they own. I think they gift things to each other sometimes, because there's this beanie that I've found in several different villager's wardrobe, but nobody has ever worn it, kind of like they're playing hot potato with it haha
