At this point, I'd give any amount of bells for a stringfish... they're gone by the end of the month and I just want to donate one to the museum. I've wasted too much time digging up clams, making bait, and getting nothing.

You won’t be able to buy the fish from someone. I suggest going to the highest area where your waterfall begins and throwing bait. The steingfish is the biggest shadow, so you’ll know which ones to fish and which to avoid.
Stand there, throw bait and check the shadow, if BIG shadow then fish it. If small or medium, continue throwing the bait until a big shadow
