Do you remember when AC was more PG than U? Yeah, I remember those days. Do you remember the amazing backstories characters had? Yeah, I remember those days. However, instead of trying to force the main franchise to change, because, let's face it, what they are doing now with it, is successful, so what incentive do they have to take a risk and turning the new crop of buyers off by making the games more PG again.

The solution. Make a spin off old fans will love. Animal Crossing: Story Mode.

The premise is simple. You live with your parents, helping them make ends meet in the city, by going out and working to pay off their debt. Along the way, you meet characters like Tom Nook, Crazy Redd, Lyle, the Able Sisters, Dr Shrunk you get the idea. But, this is before the AC games. A prequel. Where we learn all about their backstories, and what will, ultimately, drive them into village life, or where ever we see them in the main games. Meanwhile, you yourself have to face difficult choices to keep your family afloat (the choices part of the game), until, finally, you have enough, and chose to do like others before you, and move to a new life, in a village. And that's how, you, the player, ended up in your village in the main games.

Obviously, this is a very rough idea right now, but thoughts?

Well personally my first animal crossing was new leaf when i was 11/12, i want to go play the original crossing but im to lazy to emulate it and don't have a gamecube..

I think a nice summary about each villager's backstory would be a cool addition to the main games - nothing too long. I also like that Tom Nook, Able Sisters, etc. are kind of mysterious; I don't know why, it's just more interesting that way and I wouldn't ask about a worker's personal life story irl. Regardless, I don't really need lore in my AC games.

You could still try Wild World, or City Folk (A.K.A Let's go to the City) if you have a Wii. Wild World was my introduction to the series.

Someone obviously hasn't played WW or CF. Tom Nook and the Able Sisters, don't have the nicest back stories. Plus, the hardship explains why your character left the city. Oh, and probably give it a 12+ rating, just in case.

Because I don't like the premise of your game idea, it means I haven't played Wild World? Ok lol. Chill out

Because AC did used to have darker undertones, but now everyone is afraid of that. It's become too safe, and sanitized. If you truly had played the older games for any real period of time, you'd have noticed the change over the years too.

I get this game idea won't have mass appeal, but that's not it's point. It's for the older fans, who want to explore the paths not yet really tread, to appreciate the older games even more. People like me.

I have talked about the change of the direction of the series many times within multiple threads you and others have made so there was no reason to derail and be accusatory. I've posted in the ACGC and WW subforums quite a bit, not that it matters. There really isn't any reason to be so holier-than-thou about it like you are being. The statement in my post went over your head and there was no hard feelings.

Well you don't act like it. I just can't see how you can't see what I see. But if you have discussed it before, I presume that's just you. I give up if that is so, because we will obviously always disagree. Agree to disagree?

I don't think your idea would very popular nowadays. I guess what people really liked about this franchise, from day one, was not only the warmth and sense of community but also the openness of the story and characters. So that aspect was what made it into the later installments, and what little canon lore we had was left behind. But personally I think that looseness is a positive thing. It's one of the aspects that most help Animal Crossing stand out in the game community, if you ask me, because most other mainstream games tell stories for you, and in AC you tell whatever story you like. People crave that sort of thing. Look at the success of Minecraft and The Sims. So trying to add some set in stone backstory would ruin the magic for most people (hence why no one talks about minecraft story mode haha)
I mean I get where you're coming from and it's not in me to tell you what you can and can't like about the old games, obviously. Buut personally I wouldn't say by brushing aside lore AC is becoming more sanitized.
