Around 11:30 in this video nintendo life goes over their only issues with the game. This includes small issues with the UI and the inability to use the touch screen for designing patterns.

Since those were their only complaints I am not concerned however I wanted to let everyone know if you havent seen this already c:

I’m really surprised about that!! I don’t quite understand how people have been making patterns, using the joycons seems super clunky and like it’ll take ages?? Kinda concerned, I’m really looking forward to making patterns but if it takes hours and is really imprecise then idk :/ Pretty baffled by it!

I'm thinking people will draw it out in NL first then go pixel by pixel in NH to re-create and tweak it if the design outcome is THAT different.
Otherwise we can still use NL QR codes so if anything a lot of designs will just still be made in NL

I'm really surprised and disappointed too :c

Yeah it’s just crazy, seems bizarre that with all the quality of life improvements they would make something as beloved and popular as patterns so difficult.. it sucks for those of us who don’t currently own NL as well D:

I believe it is because the D-Pad give more control over how you want to design, but that’s just me (and honestly I hated the few times I made clothes, that I couldn’t used the d-pad, it really threw me for a loop) kinda excited to make clothes this time around :)

It's probably for the best. Capacitive Touchscreen styluses are really fat, like fingers. The grid space for patterns are tiny. It'd be hard to see what you're doing, or to be accurate.

The Wii didn't have a touchscreen, neither did N64 or Gamecube, though no one could complain then, we all got by.

i'm not super big into pattern making anyways; most of the patterns i do have will most likely be scanned in. but it is a little weird they don't have the touch screen option for this considering they have it for the bulletin board.

Reason is likely due to the fact the Nintendo Switch touchscreen is based on skin touch/contact and not pressure like the 3DS, it may have been implemented but during testing caused more problems than desired. I prefer control input for designs myself, so I'm not really bothered by it.

Correct. Unless there was a way to zoom in on the pattern grid while designing them, a finger or smartphone stylus would be extremely inaccurate. They probably found as much in R&D testing. The D-pad makes for much more accuracy, and like I mentioned before, has always been the way patterns were made on consoles.

Ahh that's too bad. I bought some styluses because I was confident you would be able to do that. Well, you can't be right about everything I guess! It is a shame though, going back to the gamecube-esque style of creating patterns with the controller will be a bit tedious, but if it was causing problems during testing or wasn't working properly, I understand!

At least there are new types of clothes to design, and it's neat how the patterns smooth out! So that is very cool. :)

I do find it surprising there’s not even an option to use the touch screen for pattern designing, even if it is more difficult to be accurate than with control input. But whatever I’m kind of trash at making patterns anyway so I’m not super bothered

I'm honestly shocked by this. I might just make all my designs in NL and transfer them over.

Looks like we're going old school with the pixel art! I posted this somewhere else but I wanted to add as well:
I'm hopeful that this will be a good Animal Crossing! Lots of new footage from the review copies. It makes me realise that this won't be an incredibly innovative Animal Crossing (at least not for the years between games.) The reviews did mention there's no way to keep or downgrade to a tent, a lack of touch controls for designing patterns, and didn't say anything new about villagers like if they have picnics like the trailers. So I hope that there will be patches for that basic UI stuff, and DLC for allowing for sets of new species to move in.

NL had sanctions in place to prevent stealing other people's patterns. Every QR code is embedded with a player and town ID. If these aren't yours, you can't edit or display them. I fear this may be the case for imported designs in New Horizons. Since They are two different games, your New Leaf QR codes won't be owned by the NH player, unless Nintendo removes these restrictions
